Training Camp Adds CompTIA Linux+ and Server+ Training

PHILADELPHIA — 2001 — The same year CompTIA entered both markets, Training Camp has added Linux+ and Server+ preparation to its catalog.

CompTIA introduced both certifications in 2001, and each answered a specific gap. Server+ covered the hardware side of running servers, RAID arrays, SCSI, redundant power, and the planning behind disaster recovery, the things that keep a machine available when a component fails. Linux+ validated command-line competence on Linux at a time when the operating system was showing up more and more in shops that had been purely Windows or Unix before.

Both were vendor-neutral, which was the point. A Server+ holder understood server hardware in general rather than one manufacturer’s line, and a Linux+ holder could work at the shell without being tied to a single distribution. That breadth suited administrators in mixed environments, the ones who might manage a Windows domain in the morning and a Linux box in the afternoon. Neither certification claimed to make anyone an expert. They set a dependable baseline.

Training Camp taught both in its accelerated classroom format, with lab exercises rather than pure lecture. For Linux+ that meant actual time at the command line, since the shell is not something you learn by reading about it. For Server+ it meant working with the hardware concepts directly. Each ran as a concentrated block of days aimed at working technicians.

“A lot of administrators were suddenly responsible for Linux machines they had never been trained on,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “Linux+ gave them a way to prove they could actually run those systems. Server+ did the same for the hardware.”

Vendor-neutral certifications like these gave technicians credentials that stayed useful across employers and equipment. For someone building a career, holding both said something a single-vendor certificate could not, that they could work across the systems a real shop actually ran. Adding the pair in their first year kept the catalog current with what CompTIA was bringing to market.
