What is Confederation?

A BGP confederation divides one large Autonomous System into smaller sub-ASes to reduce the iBGP full-mesh requirement while still appearing as a single AS to external peers.

Understanding Confederation

A BGP confederation is a scalability technique that divides a single large Autonomous System (AS) into multiple smaller sub-autonomous systems. This reduces the number of internal BGP (iBGP) sessions required, because routers within a sub-AS use a full iBGP mesh while the sub-ASes exchange routes among themselves, and the entire confederation still appears as a single AS to external BGP peers.
