Head Drop is a queue management technique where a network device, when its buffer is full, discards the oldest packet at the head of the queue rather than dropping newly arriving packets.

Head Drop is a queue management technique used when a buffer is full, in which the network device discards the packet at the head (front) of the queue rather than the newly arriving packet at the tail. By dropping the oldest queued packet, head drop favors more recent traffic and is used in some Quality of Service (QoS) and congestion-management schemes to control buffer occupancy.
