Understanding Traffic Obfuscation

Traffic obfuscation is the practice of disguising the content, structure, or patterns of network communications to evade detection by security monitoring tools. Attackers may encrypt, encode, pad, or tunnel data within seemingly benign protocols so that command-and-control and exfiltration traffic blends in with legitimate activity. The same techniques are also used defensively by privacy tools and censorship-circumvention software to hide the nature of traffic from observers.
