Training Camp Launches Accelerated PMP Certification Preparation

PHILADELPHIA — 2003 — As PMI’s PMP began appearing as a requirement on senior job postings, Training Camp has launched accelerated preparation for the credential.

The PMP is a different kind of certification from most of what Training Camp taught. It has little to do with any specific technology. Instead it covers the discipline of running a project, defining scope, holding a schedule, managing cost and risk, and keeping stakeholders informed and aligned. PMI built it on a defined body of project management knowledge, and earning it required documented experience leading projects, not just study.

That experience requirement shaped who the course was for. This was not training for someone hoping to become a project manager. It was for people already doing the job, often for years, who now found the credential written into the senior roles they wanted next. Employers had started treating PMP as a filter, and a capable manager without it could find the letters mattered more than the track record.

Training Camp taught the preparation in its accelerated classroom format, working through PMI’s framework and terminology and drilling the exam’s particular way of framing questions. Experienced managers often know how to run a project their own way, which does not always match the vocabulary the exam expects. Closing that gap in a focused week suited people who could not step away from active projects for long.

“These were people who already ran projects well,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “What they needed was the credential to match the work they were already doing, and the exam speaks its own language. We taught them that language.”

PMP went on to become one of the most recognized credentials in project management, well outside technology alone. Adding it broadened the Training Camp catalog beyond the strictly technical certifications it was known for.
