Training Camp Adds AWS Certification Preparation

PHILADELPHIA — 2013 — Training Camp has added preparation courses for the Amazon Web Services certification program, the credentialing track Amazon launched this year to validate cloud design and operations skills.

AWS had spent the previous several years growing from a service developers experimented with into the platform behind a great deal of production infrastructure. Companies were running real workloads on it, and hiring managers wanted a way to tell who actually knew how to build there. The new certifications answered that, asking candidates to show they could architect, deploy, and run systems on AWS rather than simply recall service names.

The courses target engineers, systems administrators, and architects who already work with cloud infrastructure and want a credential that matches the work. Training Camp built the program around hands-on labs rather than lecture slides, since the exams reward people who have actually provisioned resources and made design decisions. That emphasis matters here. Someone can memorize a service catalog and still fail to size an environment sensibly, and the certification is meant to catch exactly that gap.

The boot camp condensed exam preparation into a handful of intensive days, walking candidates through core services such as EC2, S3, and the networking pieces that hold an environment together. AWS was expanding its catalog quickly in 2013, and a course that kept pace with the current services gave candidates a fair shot at an exam that itself kept moving. The compressed schedule also suited teams that needed several people certified at once rather than one at a time.

“Amazon put a stake in the ground with these exams, and employers noticed,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “We wanted a course that got people into the console early and kept them there, because that is how the material actually sticks.”

The AWS preparation courses run in Training Camp’s accelerated, in-person boot-camp format, with instruction concentrated into a short stretch of full days so working professionals can prepare without a long interruption to their schedules.
