Training Camp Launches EC-Council Certified Network Defender Boot Camp

PHILADELPHIA — 2016 — Training Camp has launched a boot camp for the EC-Council Certified Network Defender credential, the CND certification introduced this year for defensive, blue-team security work.

Much of the security certification market had focused on offense, teaching people how systems get broken into. Defense was becoming its own discipline with its own job titles, and it asks for a different skill set. Certified Network Defender covered the work of protecting a network day to day: monitoring traffic, hardening systems, and responding when something goes wrong. Watching for an intrusion and cleaning up after one is not the same job as launching the attack.

The certification suited network administrators and security staff whose responsibility is keeping an environment standing rather than testing its defenses from the outside. Training Camp built the boot camp around hands-on defensive exercises in its accelerated, in-person format, since the tasks CND covers, configuration, monitoring, and incident response, are practical work that candidates absorb better by doing than by reading.

CND rounded out EC-Council’s certification lineup, which had long been anchored by its offensive credential. Adding a defensive track acknowledged that most security jobs are about keeping systems running rather than breaking into them, and that the daily work of a defender, tuning firewalls, reading logs, and drilling response procedures, deserved a credential of its own. The certification covered network protocols, security policy, and the tools defenders use to spot and contain trouble. Training Camp fit that material into an accelerated schedule, with lab exercises standing in for the environments a defender would actually be asked to protect.

“For years the glamour went to the offensive certs, but somebody has to defend the network every day,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “CND spoke to that side of the house, and we wanted a course that treated defense as a craft in its own right.”

EC-Council positioned CND alongside its better-known ethical hacking credential, giving defensive practitioners a certification aimed squarely at their side of the work as blue-team roles gained recognition.
