Training Camp Launches CMMC Certification Training

TREVOSE, Pa. — October 2021 — A new training program for the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, or CMMC, arrived from Training Camp this month, aimed at contractors and professionals across the defense industrial base preparing to meet Department of Defense requirements.

CMMC grew out of a persistent problem. The Defense Department wanted assurance that the companies handling its sensitive information were actually protecting it, and self-attestation had proven uneven. The framework set expectations for how contractors implement and demonstrate security practices, tying them to eligibility for certain contracts. It borrowed heavily from established federal security standards, so much of what it asked would look familiar to anyone who had worked against NIST guidance.

For the businesses in that supply chain, the stakes were practical. Falling short could mean losing the ability to bid on work. Training Camp’s program walked professionals through understanding the model, implementing the required practices, and preparing to be assessed against them. The distinction between knowing the practices and being able to prove them was central to how the program was built.

The course was built for the people carrying that responsibility inside their organizations, from IT staff to compliance leads. Delivered live online and on-site, it fit teams that needed to bring several people up to speed together rather than one at a time. Doing it as a group also helped an organization build a shared understanding of where its gaps really were. The framework was still settling in 2021, and the training reflected that reality by focusing on the practices themselves rather than treating the program as fixed.

“Companies in the defense supply chain were being told to get ready for CMMC without a lot of guidance on how,” said Mike McNelis, Vice President of Sales. “Our goal was to give them something concrete, a clear path to understanding the practices and putting them in place.”

With defense contractors facing a phased rollout, demand for practical CMMC preparation was rising across the industrial base. Training Camp said it would keep the program current as the requirements matured.
