Training Camp Expands DoD 8570 Certification Catalog

PHILADELPHIA — 2014 — Training Camp has expanded its catalog of DoD 8570-aligned certification boot camps, mapping approved credentials to the information assurance roles the directive names.

DoD Directive 8570 tied specific jobs to specific certifications. If a position carried certain information assurance duties, the person holding it was required to hold the matching credential, which turned certification from a career choice into a compliance requirement. The expanded catalog lined up certifications such as Security+ and CISSP against the roles and levels the directive defined, so a service member or contractor could see exactly which credential their position demanded.

The audience here is military and government personnel, along with the contractors who support them, working under fixed deadlines to stay in compliance. Training Camp ran the courses in an accelerated, in-person format that fit the windows people could get away from their posts. Time off is scarce in those environments, and a boot camp that certifies someone in a week rather than a semester answers a real scheduling problem.

Compliance under the directive was not a one-time event either. Roles shifted, people changed positions, and the credential requirements followed them, which kept a steady flow of personnel needing certification on a schedule set by the mission rather than by convenience. Training Camp organized the catalog so a unit could match its people to the right courses without wading through the directive’s tables themselves. The accelerated format was part of the appeal, since it let a command certify staff during a training rotation instead of pulling them off duty for weeks at a stretch.

“For a lot of these folks the certification is not optional, it is the job requirement,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “We built the schedule around the reality that they have a narrow window to get certified and get back.”

The 8570 directive shaped workforce training across the defense community for years, and the aligned credentials remained a standard reference point as agencies planned their information assurance staffing.
