Training Camp Expands DoD 8570 Information Assurance Training
PHILADELPHIA — 2006 — Building courses around the DoD 8570 directive, Training Camp has expanded its information assurance training to match the certifications the directive requires for defense security roles.
DoD Directive 8570 did something the security field had not seen before at that scale. It tied specific certifications to specific jobs. A given information assurance position now required a named credential, Security+ for some roles, CISSP for more senior ones, with the exact mapping depending on the job’s category and level. The requirement reached across the whole defense security workforce, uniformed military, civilian employees, and contractors alike.
For the people in those jobs, the directive turned certification from a nice-to-have into a condition of employment. Someone could be doing the work capably and still fall out of compliance without the right credential on file. That created a large, specific training need, and it did not leave much room for a leisurely schedule. These were working professionals who had a job to keep and a deadline to meet.
Training Camp organized its catalog around the 8570 mappings, so a student could match the certification to the role the directive assigned it to. The boot-camp format fit the situation well. Military and government staff often could only be released from their posts for a set number of days, and a concentrated classroom course worked within that constraint far better than months of part-time study.
“The directive told people exactly which certification their job required, and by when,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “Our part was straightforward. Match the training to the mapping, and get people certified inside the time they could actually be away.”
DoD 8570 shaped defense security hiring and training for years, and later guidance carried its approach forward. Building the catalog around its requirements positioned Training Camp to serve government and military teams working to meet them.
