Training Camp Introduces EC-Council Certified Incident Handler Boot Camp

PHILADELPHIA — 2010 — Training Camp introduced a boot camp for EC-Council’s Certified Incident Handler, a credential aimed at the responders who get the call when something has already gone wrong.

Most security attention and budget goes to prevention, and for good reason. But breaches happen anyway, and when they do someone has to manage the response. EC-Council’s Certified Incident Handler focused on exactly that work: detecting an incident, containing the damage, preserving evidence so it holds up later, and getting systems back to normal operation.

The training is for the people who do that job or expect to. Security analysts, system and network administrators, and the staff who would form an incident response team all fit the room. It assumes some security background and concentrates on process: recognizing what kind of incident you are facing, taking the right steps in the right order, and not destroying evidence in the rush to recover. Handled badly, an incident gets worse, and evidence that could have identified the cause is often lost in the first hour.

Training Camp runs it as an in-person boot camp with hands-on work, walking candidates through the phases of incident handling and preparing them for the certification exam. The point is muscle memory. Knowing the sequence before a real event beats improvising it under pressure. Much of the value is procedural rather than tool-specific, since the same handling steps apply whether the incident is malware, a compromised account, or a denial of service.

“Prevention gets most of the conversation, but breaches still happen, and how you handle the first hours decides how bad it gets,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “This course is for the people who take that call and have to keep a level head.”

Incident response was becoming a defined role on many security teams, and structured training gave organizations a way to prepare before an incident rather than during one.
