Training Camp Runs Executive-Only CCISO Boot Camp for Fortune 500 Leaders

PHILADELPHIA — 2011 — Training Camp ran an executive-only boot camp for EC-Council’s Certified Chief Information Security Officer, or CCISO, reserved for a limited group of senior security leaders from Fortune 500 companies.

EC-Council introduced the CCISO to certify something the technical security certifications did not: the ability to run a security program from the top. The credential is built around executive concerns, including governance, risk management, program budgeting, and aligning security with the business, rather than the hands-on defense that fills most security training. It assumes candidates who already sit at or near the top of a security organization.

This session was deliberately kept small and executive-only. Putting a limited group of Fortune 500 security leaders in one room let the discussion stay at the altitude the credential is about, meaning board reporting, risk decisions, and running a program under real budget and political constraints. It was not a course for analysts or engineers, and it was not meant to be. Much of the value came from the peer conversation as well as the curriculum.

Training Camp delivered it in an intensive in-person format led by instructors familiar with the executive material and the exam. Holding the room to senior leaders kept the examples relevant to people who carry that responsibility day to day. The CCISO was still a young credential in 2011, and part of what an executive-only session offered was a chance to shape how peers were thinking about the role while it was still taking form.

“The problems a security executive deals with are not really technical. They are about governance, risk, and money,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “Putting that group in one room, on their own, changed the quality of the conversation.”

The CCISO was among the first certifications to formalize the CISO role, reflecting how far the security leadership job had grown from its technical roots.
