Training Camp Launches First Official (ISC)² CISSP Boot Camp

PHILADELPHIA — 2004 — The field’s benchmark senior security certification has joined the Training Camp catalog, with the company’s first official (ISC)² CISSP boot camp.

The CISSP was, and remains, a wide credential. In 2004 its Common Body of Knowledge ran to ten domains, everything from access control and cryptography to security management, physical security, and the legal side of investigations. The point was breadth. A CISSP holder was expected to speak knowledgeably across the whole of information security, not to specialize in one corner of it.

That scope made the exam demanding, and (ISC)² reinforced it by requiring several years of professional experience before anyone could hold the credential. The test itself was long and wide-ranging, and a candidate who knew a few domains cold could still fail on the ones they had neglected. This was not a certification for someone new to the field. It suited security managers, architects, and senior engineers who already had the background and needed a recognized mark to go with it.

Preparing for that much material on your own is slow and easy to misjudge. Training Camp’s classroom boot camp put an instructor between the candidate and the ten domains, working through each in turn and flagging where the exam tended to catch people out. Students spent the week immersed in the room, which for a body of knowledge this size mattered more than usual.

“Nobody memorizes ten domains by reading in the evenings after work,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “The reason the boot camp works is focus. You give the material your full attention for the week, and an instructor tells you where the hard parts are.”

CISSP became a cornerstone of the Training Camp catalog and a fixture of senior security hiring across industry and government. The 2004 course was the first of many the company would run against the credential.
