Training Camp Delivers First Official (ISC)² SSCP Boot Camp

PHILADELPHIA — 2000 — Training Camp has delivered its first official (ISC)² SSCP boot camp, giving working security staff one of the earliest accelerated routes to the Systems Security Certified Practitioner credential.

The SSCP was built for the people who run security day to day, the administrators and analysts who configure access controls, watch logs, and respond when something looks wrong. It leans technical rather than managerial, which set it apart from the policy-heavy certifications that dominated the field at the time. Where CISSP asked for years of broad, management-level experience, the SSCP required only about a year in the field, which put it within reach of newer staff.

In 2000 formal security training was thin on the ground. Most people learned by doing, picking up pieces from vendor manuals and whatever a mentor happened to know. A structured credential with a defined body of knowledge gave hiring managers a reference point they had been missing.

Training Camp compressed the preparation into a focused classroom week. Instructors worked through the credential’s domains in order, from access controls and cryptography basics through monitoring and incident response, then drilled students on the exact question styles they would face. Candidates spent their days in the room, away from help-desk tickets and pager interruptions, which is most of the reason the format worked.

“A practitioner certification only means something if the person holding it can actually do the job,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “We built the SSCP week around that idea. You leave knowing the material, not just knowing how to pass.”

The course marked the start of a long relationship with (ISC)², one that would later grow to include CISSP, CCSP, and the entry-level CC. For many practitioners the SSCP also served as a stepping stone, a way to build toward the CISSP once they had the years of experience behind them. It remains a practical first step for security workers who want their skills on record.
