Training Camp Adds (ISC)² CAP Certification Boot Camp

PHILADELPHIA — 2005 — The (ISC)² Certification and Accreditation Professional credential, introduced this year, now has a Training Camp boot camp built around the risk and authorization work behind federal systems.

The CAP credential covered a specific and often underappreciated part of government security work, the process of formally authorizing a system to operate. Before a federal system goes live, someone has to assess its risks, confirm the right security controls are in place, and document all of it well enough for an authorizing official to sign off. This is the certification and accreditation process, and CAP validated the knowledge behind it.

CAP occupied an unusual middle ground. It was not as deeply technical as a hands-on security certification, but it was not pure management either. The work demanded understanding both the controls themselves and the risk-management and paperwork discipline that surrounded them. That made it a natural fit for the people who did this job in federal agencies and for the contractors who worked alongside them.

Training Camp taught the credential in its classroom boot-camp format, concentrating the material into a focused block for professionals who could only be away from the job for a set stretch of days. Much of the value was in organizing a body of process-heavy knowledge into something a candidate could hold in their head on exam day, rather than leaving them to piece it together from federal guidance on their own.

“This is the work that decides whether a federal system is allowed to go live,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “It is not glamorous, but it is essential, and until CAP there was no clean way to certify that someone knew how to do it.”

The credential has since been renamed the Certified in Governance, Risk and Compliance, or CGRC, though the work it recognizes has stayed much the same. Adding it early gave Training Camp a foothold in government security training as federal authorization requirements grew.
