Training Camp Adds VMware Enterprise Virtualization Training

PHILADELPHIA — 2006 — As virtual servers move from experiment into production data centers, Training Camp has added VMware enterprise virtualization training.

Around 2006 virtualization stopped being a lab curiosity and started running real workloads. VMware led the shift, letting organizations run many virtual servers on a single physical machine instead of buying a separate box for each application. The appeal was money. Fewer physical servers meant less hardware, less power, and less rack space. Consolidation like that was hard for any budget to ignore.

The saving came with a catch worth taking seriously. When a dozen workloads share one physical host, a single hardware failure can take all of them down at once. That changed how administrators had to think about sizing, how much memory and processing to allocate, and about high availability, the arrangements that keep services running when a host dies. Getting virtualization wrong could concentrate risk in exactly the places it used to be spread out.

Training Camp’s course covered that ground directly, sizing hosts, allocating resources, and building for availability, in its accelerated classroom format with hands-on lab work. Administrators need to see how a virtual environment behaves, including how it fails over, rather than trust that the theory holds. The compressed schedule kept the training within a defined block of days for people already running data centers.

“Consolidation saved real money, but it also put a lot of eggs in one basket,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “The administrators who did well with it were the ones who planned for a host failing. That is most of what we taught.”

Virtualization went on to become standard practice in the data center and laid much of the groundwork for the cloud computing that followed. Adding VMware training kept the Training Camp catalog aligned with where infrastructure was heading.
