Training Camp Launches Windows 7 Enterprise Support Training
PHILADELPHIA — October 2009 — With Windows 7 reaching general availability this month, Training Camp launched an enterprise support and help-desk boot camp focused on deploying and troubleshooting the new operating system across large organizations.
Windows 7 arrived after a difficult stretch for Microsoft on the desktop. Windows Vista had landed poorly, and most organizations simply stayed on Windows XP rather than adopt it. By late 2009 many of those XP environments were aging, and the warmer reception for Windows 7 gave IT departments the reason they had been waiting for to finally move. That made this a large migration happening across many companies at roughly the same time.
The training targets the people who carry a migration on the ground: desktop support technicians, help-desk staff, and the administrators planning the rollout. It concentrates on deployment, imaging, application compatibility, and the everyday troubleshooting that follows once real users are on the new system. Passing an exam matters, but the more immediate need was staff who could keep a help desk running through a company-wide upgrade.
Training Camp runs the course as an intensive in-person week with hands-on labs, so technicians practice the tasks they will actually face rather than reading about them. Windows 7 also brought changes support staff had to know, from User Account Control behavior to new imaging and deployment tooling, and the hands-on time was where those details stuck. Moving thousands of desktops is unforgiving of teams that learned on slides alone.
“A lot of companies skipped Vista entirely and rode XP as long as they could,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “Windows 7 was the version they were willing to move to, so we built the week around the support and deployment work that migration actually demands.”
Windows 7 went on to become one of the most widely deployed desktop operating systems in the enterprise, and the migration off Windows XP stretched on for years at many organizations.
