Training Camp Adds Windows Azure and Cloud Computing Training

PHILADELPHIA — February 2010 — Training Camp added Windows Azure and cloud computing training this month, timed to Microsoft’s commercial release of the Azure platform, an early move onto the cloud for a catalog long built around on-premises infrastructure.

Microsoft made Windows Azure commercially available in February 2010, putting a major vendor’s weight behind the idea that applications and storage could live in someone else’s data center. For administrators trained on servers they could see and touch, that was a real shift in how to think about a system. The resource you were responsible for was no longer in a room down the hall.

The course introduces the platform’s building blocks along with the broader concepts behind cloud computing: what moves off-premises, how storage and compute are provisioned on demand, and what changes about managing an application you no longer physically host. It was written for administrators and developers who knew the on-premises world well and needed a grounded first step into the new model rather than marketing about it.

Training Camp teaches it in person with hands-on labs. The judgment built into the week is that cloud concepts stick better when someone provisions real resources and watches how they behave, instead of trusting a diagram. This was an early course for a catalog rooted in physical servers, and the point was to make the shift concrete for people making it for the first time.

“The hardest part for a lot of good administrators was trusting a system they could not walk over and look at,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “We wanted the week to make the cloud concrete for people who had spent their careers in a server room.”

Cloud adoption was still early in 2010, and Azure was one of several platforms that would reshape how organizations bought and ran infrastructure over the decade that followed.
