Training Camp Introduces Windows Server 2003 Certification Training

PHILADELPHIA — 2003 — Following Microsoft’s launch of Windows Server 2003, Training Camp has introduced certification training for the new server platform.

Windows Server 2003 arrived after a rough couple of years for Windows security, and it showed. Microsoft shipped it with far more locked down by default, services and features turned off unless an administrator deliberately enabled them, a direct response to the worms that had spread through unnecessary open services. Active Directory was reworked as well, with functional levels and management improvements that changed how administrators handled domains and forests.

The practical consequence was that a Windows 2000 administrator could not simply carry old habits forward. Defaults that used to be safe assumptions no longer held, and some familiar procedures worked differently. Retraining here was less about learning a brand-new system and more about unlearning assumptions that no longer applied. The people most at risk of tripping up were the experienced ones, precisely because they expected the system to behave as it always had.

Training Camp ran the course in the classroom with lab access, so students could practice on the new platform before they touched a production server. Working through the changed defaults and the updated Active Directory tools in a lab, where a mistake costs nothing, is a good deal cheaper than discovering them on a live network. The format kept the material inside a focused block of days.

“The people who knew Windows 2000 best were the ones most likely to be caught out,” said Chris Porter, Chief Executive Officer. “The defaults changed. We wanted them making that adjustment in a lab, not on a server their company depended on.”

Windows Server 2003 became a long-lived platform in business networks, and many organizations moved onto it over the following years. The security-first posture it introduced set a direction Microsoft kept building on, and the course extended Training Camp’s Microsoft track onto the new release.
