Overview

What Is the Fabric Analytics Engineer (DP-600)?

The Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate, earned by passing exam DP-600: Implementing Analytics Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, is Microsoft's role-based certification for the people who design, build and manage analytics assets in Fabric.

Microsoft Fabric is Microsoft's software-as-a-service analytics platform. Data engineering, data warehousing, real-time analytics and Power BI all run in it, on top of one shared data lake called OneLake. The analytics engineer works between the data engineers who land the data and the analysts who report on it. They shape lakehouse and warehouse data into star schemas, lock it down, and build the semantic models that Power BI reports query. DP-600 tests that work, and Microsoft expects you to query data in three languages: SQL, KQL (Kusto Query Language) and DAX (Data Analysis Expressions).

DP-600 carries no formal prerequisites. It is issued and maintained by Microsoft, and the current skills-measured outline took effect on October 19, 2026.

The DP-600 Domains

Three Domains of DP-600

1

Maintain a Data Analytics Solution

Access controls, sensitivity labels, version control, deployment pipelines and the XMLA endpoint. 25 to 30%.

2

Prepare Data

Getting, transforming and querying data with SQL, KQL, DAX and the Visual query editor. The largest domain at 45 to 50%.

3

Implement and Manage Semantic Models

Storage modes, relationships, DAX, Direct Lake and incremental refresh. 25 to 30%.

Why DP-600 Matters

Why Does DP-600 Matter for Fabric Teams?

Four things that set the Fabric Analytics Engineer apart from the other Microsoft data credentials in 2026.

The Analytics Credential for Microsoft Fabric

Fabric puts lakehouses, warehouses, real-time data and Power BI in one platform, and DP-600 is the Microsoft certification written for the person who turns that data into models the business can use. Microsoft tags it for both the data engineer and the data analyst roles, which matches how the job sits between the two.

Three Query Languages on One Exam

Microsoft expects DP-600 candidates to query and analyze data with SQL, KQL and DAX, and the Prepare data domain has an objective for each one, plus the Visual query editor. That mix is the clearest sign the exam covers the whole analytics layer, from the warehouse and the Eventhouse up to the semantic model.

Built on Power BI Skills

Semantic models, DAX, storage modes and deployment pipelines are Power BI territory, so DP-600 is a natural step for experienced Power BI people moving into Fabric. Our guide to Microsoft certifications shows where it sits next to PL-300, the Power BI Data Analyst exam, on the data analyst path.

The Renewal Model, and Where Recognition Comes From

DP-600 is valid for one year and renews free through an unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn. The renewal window opens six months before your expiration date, and there is no limit on renewal attempts. Microsoft doesn't claim a DoD 8140 mapping for DP-600. The current matrix is published at the DoD Cyber Exchange.

Its value comes from the platform instead. Organizations that run Power BI and build their analytics in Fabric need people who can model, secure and deploy it, and DP-600 is the credential Microsoft wrote for that job.

What Comes After DP-600?

DP-600 covers the analytics layer of Fabric. From here, most people move upstream into data engineering, across to Azure Databricks, or deeper into the SQL platform. The three below are the common next steps.

DP-700 Fabric Data Engineer Associate

The other half of Fabric. DP-700 covers ingesting and transforming data, securing and managing an analytics solution, and monitoring and optimizing it, with SQL, PySpark and KQL. The lakehouse, warehouse and Eventhouse work in DP-600 carries straight over.

DP-750 Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate

For teams whose lakehouse runs on Azure Databricks instead of, or next to, Fabric. It covers integrating and modeling data, building and deploying optimized pipelines, and troubleshooting and maintaining Databricks workloads, in a 120-minute exam.

DP-300 Azure Database Administrator Associate

For analytics engineers who end up owning the SQL side. DP-300 covers administering SQL Server database infrastructure across cloud, on-premises and hybrid setups with Microsoft's managed relational database services, a good pairing with the warehouse and SQL work in DP-600.

Decision Point

Is DP-600 Right For You?

Two questions to answer before you commit: can you sit it, and should you pursue DP-600 specifically. The first one is easy.

Q1

Do You Qualify for DP-600?

Short Answer

Anyone Can Sit DP-600

No prerequisite credential required.

DP-600 has no formal prerequisites, and you don't need PL-300 or DP-900 first. You register through Pearson VUE and sit it at a test center or online with a proctor. The exam is offered in English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), German, French, Spanish and Portuguese (Brazil). If your language isn't on that list, you can request an extra 30 minutes.

Honest Caveat

Fabric Time Is the Real Gate

You learn Direct Lake by configuring it.

Microsoft expects subject matter expertise with semantic models, warehouses and lakehouses, plus working SQL, KQL and DAX. Several objectives ask you to choose: between data stores, between storage modes, between the two Direct Lake options. Those choices only feel obvious after you have built the items yourself, so study with a real Fabric workspace open.

Q2

Is DP-600 the Right Certification for Your Goals?

DP-600 Is a Strong Fit If...

  • You build Power BI semantic models and reports, and your organization is moving its analytics into Microsoft Fabric
  • You work as, or want to work as, an analytics engineer, BI developer or Power BI developer
  • You already write SQL and DAX and want one credential that covers lakehouses, warehouses and semantic models together
  • You own security, governance or deployment for shared Power BI and Fabric content
  • You plan to add DP-700 later and want to start from the analytics side of Fabric
  • You value a free annual renewal rather than a paid multi-year cycle

Consider Alternatives If...

  • Your work is reports and visuals in Power BI alone, where PL-300 is the closer fit
  • Your job is mostly pipelines, Spark notebooks and orchestration, where DP-700 is written for you
  • You are new to data work, where DP-900 or the vendor-neutral CompTIA Data+ comes first
  • Your lakehouse runs on Azure Databricks, where DP-750 may match your stack better
  • You need cloud infrastructure skills rather than analytics, where AZ-104 covers running Azure itself
  • You need a DoD 8140 approved credential specifically, since Microsoft claims no 8140 mapping for DP-600
Career Paths

What Jobs Can You Get With DP-600?

DP-600 maps to the analytics and BI roles that build on Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, the people who prepare data and own the semantic models reports depend on.

Curriculum

Inside the Three DP-600 Domains.

The DP-600 exam is organized into three domains, each carrying its own weight. Prepare data is by far the heaviest at 45 to 50 percent, close to half the exam. If you come from Power BI, much of the semantic model domain will feel familiar, so the SQL and KQL objectives in Prepare data are where extra study time pays off. Click any domain for what it covers.

Domains 1-2

Maintain and Prepare
1 Maintain a data analytics solution 25-30%

Security and governance first: workspace-level and item-level access controls, row-level, column-level, object-level and file-level access control, sensitivity labels and item endorsement. Then the development lifecycle, with version control for a workspace, Power BI Desktop projects (.pbip), deployment pipelines, impact analysis of downstream dependencies from lakehouses, warehouses, dataflows and semantic models, deploying semantic models through the XMLA endpoint, and reusable assets such as Power BI template (.pbit) files, Power BI data source (.pbids) files and shared semantic models.

2 Prepare data 45-50%

The heaviest domain, close to half the exam. Getting data covers data connections, discovery through the OneLake catalog and Real-Time hub, choosing between data stores, and OneLake integration for Eventhouse and semantic models. Transforming data covers views, functions and stored procedures, star schemas for a lakehouse or warehouse, denormalizing, aggregating, merging and joining, and fixing duplicates, missing data, null values and column data types. Querying covers selecting, filtering and aggregating data with the Visual query editor, SQL, KQL and DAX.

Domain 3

Semantic Models
3 Implement and manage semantic models 25-30%

Designing and building models: choosing a storage mode, star schemas, bridge tables and many-to-many relationships, DAX variables and functions (iterators, table filtering, windowing and information functions), calculation groups, dynamic format strings, field parameters, the large semantic model storage format and composite models. Optimizing enterprise-scale models covers query and report visual performance, DAX performance, Direct Lake fallback and refresh behavior, Direct Lake on OneLake versus Direct Lake on SQL analytics endpoint, and incremental refresh.

Domains and weights reflect the Microsoft DP-600 skills-measured outline as of October 19, 2026, which made minor changes to the Query and analyze data objectives. Microsoft updates the English exam first and localized versions about eight weeks later, so confirm the current outline on Microsoft Learn before scheduling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About DP-600.

The questions candidates ask most often when researching the Microsoft Fabric Analytics Engineer certification.

What is the Microsoft Fabric Analytics Engineer (DP-600) certification?

The Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate, earned by passing exam DP-600: Implementing Analytics Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, is Microsoft's role-based certification for people who design, create and manage analytics assets such as semantic models, warehouses and lakehouses in Microsoft Fabric. It covers security and governance, the development lifecycle, data preparation, and semantic model design and optimization.

What is the current DP-600 exam?

The current exam is DP-600, and its skills-measured outline took effect on October 19, 2026. That update made minor changes to the Query and analyze data objectives and left the audience profile unchanged. As of October 2026, DP-600 is not on Microsoft's list of exams scheduled to retire, and no replacement has been announced.

Are there prerequisites for DP-600?

No. DP-600 has no formal prerequisites, so you can register and sit the exam without holding PL-300, DP-900 or any other certification first. Microsoft does expect subject matter expertise with semantic models, warehouses and lakehouses, and the ability to query and analyze data with SQL, KQL and DAX.

What are the three DP-600 domains?

The three domains are Maintain a data analytics solution (25 to 30 percent), Prepare data (45 to 50 percent), and Implement and manage semantic models (25 to 30 percent). Prepare data is close to half the exam. It covers getting, transforming and querying data with SQL, KQL, DAX and the Visual query editor.

How many questions are on the DP-600 exam?

Microsoft does not publish a question count for DP-600. Its general guidance is that most Microsoft certification exams have 40 to 60 questions, and the number can vary. You have 100 minutes for the exam, and Microsoft suggests setting aside 120 minutes of seat time for the instructions and the candidate agreement. Microsoft doesn't list question types for individual exams, but its exam sandbox shows the formats you may see, including multiple choice, drag and drop, hot area, build list and case studies.

What is the passing score for DP-600?

You need 700 on a scale of 1 to 1,000 to pass. Microsoft uses scaled scoring, so 700 does not mean 70 percent correct. The passing score takes the difficulty of the questions into account, which is why a raw percentage won't tell you whether you passed.

How much does the DP-600 exam cost?

As of October 2026, the DP-600 exam costs $165 USD in the United States. Microsoft sets the price by the country or region where the exam is proctored, and you schedule it through Pearson VUE. Training Camp's Fabric Analytics Engineer boot camp includes the $165 exam voucher and an exam retake in the course price.

Is the Fabric Analytics Engineer certification on DoD 8140?

No DoD 8140 mapping is claimed for it. Microsoft doesn't list DP-600 against a DoD 8140 work role, so don't count on it to satisfy a cyber-coded position requirement on its own. Its value is with employers that build analytics on Microsoft Fabric and Power BI. See the full DoD 8140 work role paths.

How long is DP-600 valid and how do you renew it?

The Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate is valid for one year. You renew it free by passing an unproctored, open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn before it expires. The renewal window opens six months before your expiration date, and there is no limit on renewal attempts. If the certification lapses, you have to pass DP-600 again.

What jobs can you get with DP-600?

DP-600 maps to roles such as Analytics Engineer, BI Developer, Power BI Developer, Data Warehouse Developer, Senior Data Analyst and Analytics Consultant. These are the people who prepare data in Fabric and build the semantic models that reports and dashboards run on.

PL-300 vs DP-600, which should you take?

Take PL-300 if your job is building Power BI reports and models for business users. It covers preparing, modeling and visualizing data and managing Power BI, with Power Query and DAX. Take DP-600 if you also work with lakehouses, warehouses, and Fabric security and deployment, and you need SQL and KQL alongside DAX. Neither is a prerequisite for the other, so pick the one that matches the work you do now.

DP-600 vs DP-700, what is the difference?

Both are Microsoft Fabric associate certifications with a 100-minute exam, a $165 fee and a 700 passing score. DP-700, the Fabric Data Engineer, focuses on ingesting, transforming and orchestrating data with SQL, PySpark and KQL. DP-600 focuses on preparing that data for analysis and building the semantic models on top, with SQL, KQL and DAX. Look at where your week goes. Pipelines and Spark notebooks point to DP-700, and models, measures and reports point to DP-600.

How hard is the DP-600 exam?

DP-600 is an associate-level exam that rewards hands-on Fabric and Power BI experience. Much of the difficulty is breadth. You switch between SQL, KQL and DAX, and several objectives ask you to choose between options, such as data stores, storage modes, and Direct Lake on OneLake versus Direct Lake on SQL analytics endpoint. Time spent building real lakehouses and semantic models makes the biggest difference.

Is the Fabric Analytics Engineer certification worth it in 2026?

For anyone building analytics on Microsoft Fabric or moving Power BI work into Fabric, yes. It is the Microsoft credential written for the analytics engineer role, it renews free each year, and the October 2026 outline update shows Microsoft is keeping it current. The case is weaker if you only build reports, where PL-300 fits better, or if your data platform isn't Microsoft.
