A plain guide to the Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate as of October 2026. It covers exam DP-700, the three equally weighted domains, the format and passing score, the free annual renewal, how it compares with DP-600 and the Azure Databricks exam, and the data roles it fits.
The Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate, earned by passing exam DP-700 (Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric), is Microsoft's role-based certification for the people who load, transform, secure and tune data inside Microsoft Fabric.
Fabric is Microsoft's software-as-a-service analytics platform. Data Factory pipelines, Spark notebooks, lakehouses, warehouses, Real-Time Intelligence and Power BI all run on it, over one shared data lake called OneLake. DP-700 checks whether you can build on that platform end to end: pick the right tool for a load, write the transformation in SQL, PySpark or KQL, control who sees which rows, and work out why last night's pipeline failed.
Microsoft lists no formal prerequisites. It does expect subject matter expertise with data loading patterns, data architectures and orchestration, and it names SQL, PySpark and Kusto Query Language (KQL) as the skills you need. The credential is issued and maintained by Microsoft, and the current skills-measured outline took effect on October 19, 2026.
Workspace settings, version control, deployment pipelines, access controls and orchestration. 30 to 35%.
Full and incremental loads, shortcuts and mirroring, and batch and streaming transformation. 30 to 35%.
Monitoring and alerts, fixing errors across Fabric items, and tuning Spark, tables and queries. 30 to 35%.
Four things that set the Fabric Data Engineer apart from other data credentials in 2026.
Fabric runs Data Factory pipelines, Spark notebooks, lakehouses, warehouses, Real-Time Intelligence and Power BI as one SaaS platform over a shared data lake. DP-700 is the Microsoft certification written for the engineer who builds the pipelines and tables underneath all of it. The older Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203) retired on March 31, 2025, so for Fabric work this is the current credential.
DP-700 expects you to transform data in SQL, PySpark and KQL, and to know when each is the better choice. A T-SQL expert who has never opened a Spark notebook or written a KQL query has real ground to cover. That spread is also what makes the credential a useful signal, because it shows you can work across Fabric's engines rather than inside just one.
Streaming isn't a side topic here. Eventstream, Eventhouse, Spark structured streaming and KQL windowing functions sit in the outline next to full and incremental batch loads. If you're still deciding where to begin, our look at AZ-900 in 2026 lays out Microsoft's updated data path, DP-900 then DP-700.
DP-700 is valid for one year and renews free through a short, open-book online assessment on Microsoft Learn, a lighter and cheaper maintenance model than the paid multi-year cycles of most certifications. It is not a DoD 8140 credential and does not appear on the qualification matrix. The current matrix is published at the DoD Cyber Exchange.
Its weight comes from the platform instead. Organizations moving analytics onto Fabric need people who can build and run it, and DP-700 is the Microsoft credential that names that exact skill set.
The certification, the DP-700 exam, and how to keep it current, as of October 2026.
Microsoft offers no expert-level Fabric certification above DP-700, so the next step runs sideways rather than up. Most data engineers add the analytics layer, a second data platform, or the reporting side. These three are the common moves.
The other Fabric associate exam. DP-600 moves up the stack from pipelines and tables to semantic models, with DAX alongside SQL and KQL. Its Prepare data domain carries 45 to 50 percent of the exam, so a lot of your DP-700 loading and transformation work carries straight over.
The same job on a different platform. DP-750 covers setting up Azure Databricks, governing data in Unity Catalog, and building pipelines in SQL and Python, in a 120-minute exam. It suits engineers whose employers run Databricks next to Fabric or instead of it.
The reporting layer your tables feed. PL-300 covers preparing, modeling and visualizing data in Power BI with Power Query and DAX. It pays off most for engineers who also build the reports, or who want a sharper sense of what analysts need from a lakehouse.
DP-700 sits at the associate tier of Microsoft's data path. Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900) is optional groundwork, and from DP-700 the path branches into analytics, reporting or a second data platform.

Pick your path
Two questions to answer before you commit: can you sit it, and should you pursue DP-700 specifically. Here's a straight answer to both.
No prerequisite credential required.
Microsoft lists no prerequisite certification or experience requirement for DP-700, and DP-900 is optional. You register through Pearson VUE and test at a center or online with a proctor. In practice the exam assumes you already write SQL and have spent some time with PySpark and KQL.
SQL alone won't carry you.
If your background is mostly T-SQL or classic warehouse ETL, expect to spend much of your study time on Eventstream, Spark structured streaming and KQL windowing functions, because a traditional warehouse job rarely touches them. Build and break things in a real Fabric workspace as you study. Reading about a failing pipeline isn't the same as fixing one.
DP-700 maps to the data engineering and data platform roles organizations hire for as they build analytics on Microsoft Fabric.
The direct match for DP-700. Builds and runs the pipelines, lakehouses and warehouses that turn raw data into something analysts can use, and keeps the loads running on schedule.
Sits between engineering and reporting, shaping data into dimensional models and clean tables that Power BI semantic models can sit on. It's the role where pairing DP-700 with DP-600 makes the most sense.
Moves data between systems with pipelines, Dataflows Gen2 and notebooks. Full and incremental loads, mirroring and OneLake shortcuts are all DP-700 objectives, and they are the daily work of this job in Fabric.
Writes PySpark and Spark SQL against large datasets and tunes the jobs that run them. The DP-700 objectives on Lakehouse table optimization and Spark performance are aimed at this work.
Handles data in motion, such as events, logs and sensor feeds, with Eventstream, Eventhouse and KQL. DP-700 covers streaming from choosing an engine through writing windowing functions.
Owns the Fabric tenant side: workspace settings, version control, deployment pipelines, access controls and audit logs. The first DP-700 domain reads a lot like this role's job description.
DP-700 has two close relatives at the associate level and one fundamentals exam below it. Here's how the four line up, using Microsoft's published details as of October 2026.

The DP-700 exam is organized into three domains, and Microsoft weights every one at 30 to 35 percent. If your background is T-SQL, plan extra time for the streaming objectives in domain 2. Click any domain for the skills Microsoft lists under it.
Configuring Fabric workspace settings for Spark, domains, OneLake and Apache Airflow. Lifecycle management with version control, database projects and deployment pipelines. Security and governance from workspace and item access down to row-level, column-level, object-level and folder or file-level controls, plus dynamic data masking, sensitivity labels, endorsement, audit logs and OneLake security. Orchestration closes it out: choosing between Dataflow Gen2, a pipeline and a notebook, building schedules and event-based triggers, and using parameters and dynamic expressions.
Designing full and incremental loads, preparing data for a dimensional model, and loading streaming data. The batch half covers choosing a data store and a transformation tool (Dataflows Gen2, notebooks, KQL or T-SQL), OneLake shortcuts, mirroring, pipelines, and transforming with PySpark, SQL and KQL, including denormalizing, aggregating and handling duplicate, missing and late-arriving data. The streaming half covers choosing an engine, native tables versus shortcuts and query acceleration in Real-Time Intelligence, Eventstream, Spark structured streaming, KQL and windowing functions.
Monitoring data ingestion, data transformation and semantic model refresh, and configuring alerts. Finding and fixing errors in pipelines, Dataflow Gen2, notebooks, Eventhouse, Eventstream, T-SQL and OneLake shortcuts. Then performance work: optimizing Lakehouse tables, pipelines, data warehouses, Eventstream and Eventhouse, Spark jobs and query performance.
Domains and weights reflect the Microsoft DP-700 skills-measured outline as of October 19, 2026. Microsoft updates localized versions about eight weeks after the English exam, so confirm the current outline in the DP-700 study guide before scheduling.
The questions candidates ask most often when researching the Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer certification.
The Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate, earned by passing exam DP-700, is Microsoft's role-based certification for data engineers who work in Microsoft Fabric. The exam, Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, covers setting up and securing Fabric workspaces, loading and transforming batch and streaming data, and monitoring and tuning what you build. Microsoft expects you to work in SQL, PySpark, and KQL.
DP-700 is the only exam for the credential, and its current skills-measured outline took effect on October 19, 2026. Microsoft rated the changes as minor, with updates to the Fabric workspace settings and performance optimization skills. Localized versions of the exam are updated about eight weeks after the English one. DP-700 is not on Microsoft's list of exams scheduled to retire.
No. Microsoft lists no prerequisite certification or required experience for DP-700, so anyone can register. It does expect subject matter expertise with data loading patterns, data architectures, and orchestration, plus working skill in SQL, PySpark, and KQL. Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900) is a useful warm-up, but it isn't required.
The three domains are Implement and manage an analytics solution (30 to 35 percent), Ingest and transform data (30 to 35 percent), and Monitor and optimize an analytics solution (30 to 35 percent). With the weights that even, no domain is safe to skim. Each one is roughly a third of your score.
Microsoft does not publish a question count for DP-700. Its general guidance is that most Microsoft certification exams contain between 40 and 60 questions. You get 100 minutes to answer them, inside 120 minutes of total seat time that also covers the instructions and the candidate agreement. Microsoft doesn't list the question types for a given exam in advance, but its free exam sandbox lets you try the formats it uses, including case studies.
You need 700 on a scale of 1 to 1,000. It's a scaled score, so 700 does not mean 70 percent correct. Some questions are worth more than one point, there's no penalty for guessing, and a few unscored questions may be mixed in, so answer every question.
The DP-700 exam costs $165 USD in the United States as of October 2026. Microsoft prices it by the country where you test, so the fee varies by region and local taxes. You book it through Pearson VUE, at a test center or online. Training Camp's Fabric Data Engineer boot camp includes the exam voucher in the program fee, along with a free retake.
No. Microsoft certifications, including DP-700, don't appear on the DoD 8140 qualification matrix, so DP-700 on its own won't satisfy a cyber-coded position requirement. It's a platform credential for data work rather than a cyber workforce qualification. See the full DoD 8140 work role paths.
DP-700 is valid for one year. You renew it free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, and the renewal window opens six months before your expiration date. The assessment is shorter than the exam, unproctored, and open book, and you can retake it as often as you need before the expiration date. Passing extends the certification one year from the expiration date.
DP-700 lines up with roles such as Data Engineer, Analytics Engineer, ETL Developer, Spark Developer, Streaming Data Engineer, and Data Platform Engineer. It carries the most weight where the employer runs Microsoft Fabric or is moving Azure Synapse and Data Factory workloads onto it.
Take DP-700 if you build the pipelines, notebooks, and streaming jobs that move data into Fabric. Take DP-600, the Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate, if most of your work is semantic models, DAX, and preparing data for reports. Both are $165, 100-minute associate exams that renew free every year, and neither requires the other. They overlap on data preparation, so passing one makes the other a shorter climb.
Microsoft retired the Azure Data Engineer Associate certification, its exam DP-203, and the renewal assessment on March 31, 2025. DP-203 was built around Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, and related Azure services. If you earned it, it stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript, but it can't be renewed. For a current Microsoft data engineering credential, DP-700 covers Fabric and DP-750 covers Azure Databricks.
The hard part is breadth. DP-700 spans batch and streaming data, three query languages, and security from workspace roles down to row-level and column-level controls, and each domain is about a third of the exam. Several objectives ask you to choose the right tool for a scenario, such as Dataflow Gen2, a pipeline, or a notebook, so hands-on time in a real Fabric workspace counts for more than memorizing feature lists.
For data engineers working in Microsoft Fabric, or moving there from Synapse or Data Factory, yes. It's the Microsoft certification written for that job, the exam costs $165, and it renews free each year. It's less useful if your platform is Azure Databricks, where DP-750 fits better, or if your work is mostly reports and semantic models, where DP-600 or PL-300 is the closer match.
Tell us where you are, from choosing between DP-700 and DP-600 to moving a data team off Synapse or pricing Fabric training for a group, and we'll help you map out the right path.
