CAPM is the only PMI certification you can earn with no project experience at all, and since October 2020 it no longer expires on a five year clock. Those two facts carry the whole case for the Certified Associate in Project Management. They also explain why a specific group of candidates should skip it and go straight to the PMP, which this guide gets to in a moment.
What follows is a breakdown of the 2023 exam content outline, which is still the current one as of late 2026, the exam format, the eligibility rules, the real cost over a three year cycle, and how CAPM lines up against PMP for people in IT who have been handed a project and a deadline without the title to go with it.

What is the CAPM certification?
The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is the Project Management Institute’s entry level credential. It tests whether you understand how projects are planned, run and closed under three different approaches, predictive, agile and hybrid, and whether you can do the business analysis work that feeds a project before it starts. Whether you have actually managed one is left to the PMP, which is the reason the two exams have such different eligibility rules.
The current exam is built on the CAPM Examination Content Outline, 2023 Exam Update, which went live on July 25, 2023. PMI has not published a newer outline since, so a candidate booking for 2027 is still studying against the same four domains and 19 tasks. The reference reading has moved, though. PMI’s exam prep page now lists the PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition, released in 2025, alongside the Agile Practice Guide and the process groups practice guide.
| Exam fact | CAPM (2023 Exam Update) |
|---|---|
| Questions | 150 total, 135 scored, 15 unscored pretest items |
| Time | 180 minutes, with one optional 10 minute break after question 75 |
| Question types | Multiple choice, drag and drop matching, hot spot, animation and comic strip scenarios |
| Passing score | Not published. PMI sets it psychometrically and reports proficiency by domain |
| Delivery | Pearson VUE test center or online proctored |
| Attempts | Up to 3 within the one year eligibility window |
| Prerequisites | Secondary degree plus 23 contact hours of project management education |
| Renewal | 15 PDUs every 3 years |
Four domains, 150 questions, three hours. Business Analysis Frameworks is 27 percent of the exam, and it is the domain that catches IT candidates who assumed CAPM was only about schedules and budgets.
What are the CAPM exam domains and weights?
The four domains below come straight from the content outline. Pay attention to the task counts as much as the percentages, because PMI writes questions to tasks, and a domain with six tasks has six distinct things it can ask you to do.
Weight your study to match. Fundamentals and Business Analysis together are 63 percent of the scored questions. Predictive and Agile together are 37 percent, and candidates who come from IT usually need less time on them because they have lived inside both delivery models. The mistake is spending the first three weeks on Gantt charts and critical path because that feels like project management, then discovering that requirements traceability and stakeholder analysis are worth more points than scheduling.
The business analysis domain is in the outline because PMI treats the work before a project is approved as part of the discipline, and because many CAPM holders end up in coordinator and analyst roles where that is most of the job. On the exam it shows up as scenario questions: a sponsor changes the goal mid elicitation, a requirement has no traceable source, a roadmap and a release plan disagree. The answer PMI wants is always the one that goes back to the documented requirement and the stakeholder who owns it, not the one that keeps the schedule.
How does the CAPM exam work on test day?
You get 180 minutes for 150 questions, which is 72 seconds each. Fifteen of the questions are unscored pretest items that PMI is calibrating for future forms, and you will not know which ones they are, so every question gets the same effort. The single break comes after question 75. Once you take it, questions 1 through 75 are locked, so review anything you flagged in the first half before you leave the screen. The tutorial and the end of exam survey do not count against the clock.
The question formats are broader than people expect from an entry level exam. Beyond standard multiple choice there are drag and drop matching items, hot spot items where you click a region of a diagram, and scenario items delivered as a short animation or a comic strip panel before the question appears. The scenario formats are not harder, but they take longer to read, and the time cost adds up across a three hour sitting. PMI’s own sample items are the right place to see each format before exam day.
PMI does not publish a passing score. The cut is set by psychometric analysis of each form, and your report shows a proficiency level for each domain, not a percentage. That has a practical implication for practice tests. A raw practice percentage tells you less than a domain by domain breakdown, which is the same point made in the guide to what a practice test score actually means. Track the four domains separately and retest the weakest two before taking another full form.
CAPM eligibility: who can take the exam?
Two requirements. A secondary degree, meaning a high school diploma, GED or the global equivalent, and 23 contact hours of project management education completed before you sit the exam. There is no experience requirement, and there has not been one since August 2019, when PMI retired the old option of qualifying with 1,500 hours on a project team. The 23 hours can come from PMI’s own on demand prep course, an instructor led course from an Authorized Training Partner, or a comparable course that covers the outline. PMI’s CAPM certification page spells out what qualifies.
One rule is changing. PMI’s PMP page states that live training classes must come from eligible providers starting December 1, 2026, and it is reasonable to expect the same restriction to reach CAPM’s 23 hours. A three day CAPM boot camp covers the 23 hour requirement with room to spare, but confirm the provider’s status if you are booking a class that runs after December 1.
How much does CAPM cost in 2026?
The exam fee is $225 for PMI members and $300 for non members. PMI membership runs about $160 a year plus a $10 application fee, and it is also what unlocks the member rate, so joining first saves money on the exam only if you would have paid for membership anyway. A retake is $150 for members and $200 for non members, and you get up to three attempts inside your one year eligibility window before the fee is forfeited and you reapply.
Renewal is where CAPM got cheaper. Before October 2020, a CAPM lasted five years and then you retook the exam. Now it runs on a three year cycle with 15 professional development units, and the renewal fee is modest compared to the exam. The PDU rule has structure to it: at least nine of the 15 have to be education, with a minimum of two in each of PMI’s three Talent Triangle areas (ways of working, power skills, business acumen), and no more than six can be giving back activities like volunteering or mentoring. The certification maintenance page has the full breakdown.
| Cost item | PMI member | Non member |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee | $225 | $300 |
| Retake fee | $150 | $200 |
| PMI membership (annual) | About $160 plus $10 application fee | n/a |
| Renewal (every 3 years) | $60 | $150 |
| Reschedule inside 30 days of appointment | $70 | $70 |
| Three year total, member, one attempt | About $775 including three years of dues | |
| Three year total, non member, one attempt | $450 |
The renewal fee figures come from training providers rather than a PMI page, because PMI does not state them on the maintenance page itself, so verify the current number in your myPMI dashboard before your cycle ends. What matters in the cost comparison is the non member path at $450 over three years versus the member path at roughly $775. Membership pays for itself only if you use the member discounts on PMP later, buy the standards through PMI, or attend chapter events for your PDUs.
CAPM vs PMP: which one should you take?
If you qualify for the PMP, take the PMP. That is the frank answer, and the eligibility rules make it easy to check. PMP requires 36 months of experience leading projects if you hold a bachelor’s degree, 48 months with an associate’s, or 60 months with a secondary degree, all within the last ten years, plus 35 hours of training. If you clear that bar, the PMP is the credential employers write into job postings, it carries a documented salary premium, and holding a CAPM first does not shorten the path.
If you do not qualify, CAPM is the right move, and there is one mechanical advantage worth knowing. PMI states that an active CAPM certification fulfills the PMP’s 35 hour training requirement. So a candidate who earns the CAPM now and accumulates the experience over the next three years can apply for the PMP without buying a second training course, as long as the CAPM is still active when the application goes in.
| CAPM | PMP | |
|---|---|---|
| Experience required | None | 36 to 60 months leading projects, by degree level |
| Education required | Secondary degree plus 23 contact hours | 35 hours, or an active CAPM |
| Exam | 150 questions, 180 minutes | 180 questions, 240 minutes |
| Exam fee | $225 member, $300 non member | Higher. See the PMP cost guide linked below |
| Renewal | 15 PDUs every 3 years | 60 PDUs every 3 years |
| Typical role | Project coordinator, junior PM, analyst, team lead | Project manager, program manager |
| Salary signal | No PMI figure published for CAPM | US median $135,000, 24% above non certified (PMI Earning Power, 14th edition) |
Jeff Porch’s PMP cost and eligibility guide has the current PMP fees and the application audit process, and the PMP salary breakdown covers what the credential pays by industry. For CAPM there is no PMI salary survey figure, which is itself useful information. The credential opens the door to coordinator and junior PM roles, and the pay follows the title rather than the certificate.
Three candidates, three different answers
Consider a help desk lead who has run two internal rollouts, a ticketing migration and a laptop refresh, and wants the PMO to take the next project request seriously. No formal PM title, under 36 months of countable experience. CAPM is the right call, and the business analysis domain maps directly to the requirements work those rollouts already involved.
A second case is a systems administrator with five years of leading infrastructure projects under a project manager’s name but never their own. The hours may still count. PMI asks whether you led and directed the project work, not whether the title was on the org chart, so this candidate should document the experience and apply for PMP before settling for CAPM.
The third is a network engineer studying for CCNA who has been told project management would help with promotion. CAPM adds a credential but not the technical depth the promotion likely depends on. Finish the technical certification first and revisit CAPM when a coordinator or lead role is actually on the table. These are illustrations, not case files, but the pattern holds: the experience test decides it.
What jobs does CAPM qualify you for?
CAPM is positioned for project coordinators, junior project managers, business analysts and team members who want to move into project leadership. In IT specifically it shows up on postings for infrastructure project coordinators, implementation specialists and PMO analysts, roles where someone else owns the budget but you own the schedule, the risk log and the status report.
Labor data exists for the broader occupation rather than the certification. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the May 2025 median wage for project management specialists was $102,320, with 7 percent projected growth from 2025 to 2035 and roughly 76,500 openings a year, most of them from people leaving the occupation rather than new positions. Its BLS occupational outlook entry lists a bachelor’s degree as the typical entry education, a reminder that CAPM supplements a resume rather than replacing one.
How to study for the CAPM exam
Read the content outline first and build the study calendar from the task list, not from a textbook’s chapter order. Nineteen tasks across four domains, weighted 36, 17, 20 and 27. Give fundamentals and business analysis the first two thirds of your time, then cover predictive and agile, then run full length practice forms. The guide on how to turn an exam objectives document into a study plan walks through that method for any vendor, and the CAPM outline is one of the cleaner ones to apply it to because the tasks are concrete.
Learn PMI’s vocabulary as PMI defines it. This is the single biggest source of lost points for experienced IT people. Your team’s sprint review may be a status meeting, but on the exam a sprint review has a specific purpose and a specific set of attendees. A change request has a lifecycle with named steps, a risk register has required fields, and a product roadmap is distinct from a release plan even though most IT shops use the terms interchangeably. The exam is testing whether you know the standard, and the standard is the PMBOK Guide, the Agile Practice Guide and PMI’s business analysis guide, which are the three books the outline references. Read the glossary entries for any term you think you already know, because the ones you are confident about are the ones you will not look up, and those are where the definitional misses happen. Make a running list of terms your workplace uses differently from PMI. That list is usually short, but every item on it is a question you would otherwise get wrong.
Then practice the formats. Sit at least two full three hour forms with the break after question 75, so the pacing is familiar and you learn how long the animation and comic strip items take you. If you are consistently finishing a 150 question form with more than 30 minutes left, you are probably reading the scenario items too fast and missing the detail the question turns on.
On the 23 hours. Count them before you book. PMI audits a percentage of applications, and the education hours are the item an audit asks you to document, which is a problem when a candidate assumed a college course or an on the job training session qualified and the content did not cover the outline. Keep the certificate of completion and the course outline for any class you plan to claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are on the CAPM exam?
The CAPM exam has 150 questions, of which 135 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest items. You have 180 minutes, with one optional 10 minute break after question 75. Questions 1 through 75 lock once you take the break.
What is the passing score for the CAPM exam?
PMI does not publish a passing score. The cut is set by psychometric analysis of each exam form, and your score report shows a proficiency level for each of the four domains rather than a percentage.
Do you need experience to get CAPM certified?
No. CAPM requires a secondary degree (high school diploma, GED or global equivalent) and 23 contact hours of project management education completed before the exam. PMI removed the experience based eligibility option in August 2019.
How much does the CAPM exam cost?
The exam fee is $225 for PMI members and $300 for non members as of October 2026. A retake is $150 for members and $200 for non members, and you can attempt the exam up to three times within your one year eligibility period.
Does CAPM expire?
CAPM is valid for three years. To renew you need 15 professional development units per cycle, including at least nine education PDUs with two in each Talent Triangle area, plus a renewal fee. Before October 2020 the credential lasted five years and required retaking the exam.
Is CAPM worth it if you can get PMP?
Generally no. If you meet the PMP experience requirement, 36 months with a bachelor’s degree or 60 months with a secondary degree, the PMP is the credential employers ask for and it carries a documented salary premium. CAPM is designed for people who cannot yet document that experience.
Does CAPM count toward PMP?
An active CAPM certification satisfies the PMP’s 35 hour training requirement, so you do not need to buy a separate PMP prep course to apply. It does not reduce the PMP experience requirement.
