Understanding NAT Traversal

NAT Traversal refers to the technique used to establish and maintain communication between network devices located behind Network Address Translation (NAT) devices, such as routers, by overcoming the limitations imposed by NAT. This enables devices on different private networks to communicate with each other over the Internet. NAT Traversal methods include techniques like UDP hole punching, relay servers, and Session Traversal Utilities for NAT (STUN) which assist in establishing direct connections between devices that are otherwise hindered by NAT configurations.
