Route Distinguisher Definition: A Route Distinguisher is a unique identifier used in Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks to distinguish between different VPN routes that share the same IP address space.
Route Distinguisher (RD) in networking is a mechanism used in Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) VPNs to uniquely identify and distinguish VPN routes within a service provider's network. It acts as a prefix to the IPv4 or IPv6 address of a VPN route, ensuring its uniqueness when shared across the network. The RD value is added to the route's address to create a globally unique VPN route.
