The PECB Certified Data Protection Officer credential shows you can perform the DPO role the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) defines: informing and advising the organization, monitoring compliance, and cooperating with the supervisory authority. It certifies the person in the role, not a management system.
Current and prospective Data Protection Officers, privacy and compliance managers, legal and information security professionals with GDPR responsibilities, and consultants who serve as an outsourced DPO.
PECB asks for a fundamental understanding of the GDPR and a working knowledge of data protection requirements. A legal background is not required.
Day 1 covers GDPR concepts and principles: scope, lawful bases, data subject rights. Day 2 covers designating the DPO and analyzing a GDPR compliance program. Day 3 is DPO operations: DPIAs, privacy by design, technical and organizational measures, transfers. Day 4 covers monitoring and improving compliance, breach handling, and the GDPR toolkit. The four days follow PECB’s official course structure, with the exam at the end.
The exam covers 3 competency domains: data protection concepts, the GDPR and compliance measures; roles and responsibilities of accountable parties; technical and organizational measures for data protection. Questions are weighted across the domains, and the course is organized so every domain is taught before you sit the exam.
The exam has 80 multiple-choice questions, a mix of standalone and scenario-based, and lasts 3 hours. It is open-book, and the passing score is 70%. Online exams are graded instantly.
Yes. Both the PECB certification exam and the certification fee are included in your course fee, and the exam is scheduled at the end of the course. There is nothing extra to buy to get certified.
Yes. We include one free exam retake within 12 months of your first attempt, and it is covered by your course fee.
Under GDPR Article 37, yes if you are a public authority, if your core activities involve large-scale regular and systematic monitoring of individuals, or if you process special categories of data or criminal conviction data at scale. Many organizations outside those cases appoint one anyway because it is the simplest way to show accountability.
ISO/IEC 27701 certifies a privacy information management system, the framework an organization runs. The Certified Data Protection Officer credential certifies the person holding the DPO role: the legal obligations, the tasks and how to work with supervisory authorities. The GDPR has applied since 25 May 2018 and has not been revised, so there is no edition to track. As of 2026 the course reflects current enforcement practice and guidance from the European Data Protection Board.
