how we answer them.
ISO/IEC 27701 is the international standard for a privacy information management system (PIMS), the framework an organization uses to manage personal data and demonstrate privacy compliance. The PECB Certified ISO/IEC 27701 Lead Implementer credential shows you can plan, build, operate and improve a PIMS against the 2025 edition of the standard.
Privacy and data protection managers, information security managers extending their program to personal data, project team members implementing a PIMS, and consultants who advise on privacy compliance.
PECB asks for a fundamental understanding of information privacy. Since the 2025 edition, ISO/IEC 27001 is no longer a prerequisite for the standard or the course.
Day 1 introduces ISO/IEC 27701:2025 and initiating a PIMS. Day 2 builds the implementation plan, including privacy risk assessment and control selection. Day 3 implements the PII controller, PII processor and shared controls. Day 4 covers monitoring, continual improvement and preparing for the certification audit. The four days follow PECB’s official course structure, with the exam at the end.
The exam covers 7 competency domains: fundamental principles of a PIMS; initiating a PIMS implementation; planning a PIMS implementation; implementing a PIMS; monitoring and measurement; continual improvement; preparing for a PIMS certification audit. Questions are weighted across the domains, and the course is organized so every domain is taught before you sit the exam.
The exam has 80 multiple-choice questions, a mix of standalone and scenario-based, and lasts 3 hours. It is open-book, and the passing score is 70%. Online exams are graded instantly.
Yes. Both the PECB certification exam and the certification fee are included in your course fee, and the exam is scheduled at the end of the course. There is nothing extra to buy to get certified.
Yes. We include one free exam retake within 12 months of your first attempt, and it is covered by your course fee.
Not any more. ISO/IEC 27701:2025, published in October 2025, is a standalone standard, so an organization can build and certify a PIMS with or without an existing ISO/IEC 27001 system. If you do have one, the two integrate cleanly.
Lead Implementer builds and operates the privacy information management system. Lead Auditor assesses one against the standard. If you own the privacy program, take Lead Implementer; if you audit it, internally or for a certification body, take Lead Auditor. Compare all of our PECB courses side by side on the PECB training courses page.
As of 2026 the current edition is ISO/IEC 27701:2025. It replaced the 2019 edition, which was an extension of ISO/IEC 27001, with a standalone standard that has its own requirements clauses and regroups the controls for PII controllers, PII processors, and a shared set for both. This course teaches the 2025 edition.
