how we answer them.
ISO/IEC 42001 is the first international management system standard for artificial intelligence, published in December 2023. It gives an organization a certifiable framework for governing how it builds, buys and uses AI. The PECB Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer credential shows you can plan, build and operate an AI management system (AIMS) against it.
AI governance leads, risk and compliance managers, information security managers whose scope now includes AI, and product or data leaders responsible for how the organization develops and deploys AI.
PECB asks for general knowledge of AI management system concepts and ISO/IEC 42001. You do not need to be a data scientist, and experience with another management system standard such as ISO/IEC 27001 makes the structure feel familiar.
Day 1 introduces ISO/IEC 42001:2023 and initiating an AIMS. Day 2 plans the implementation, including AI risk assessment and AI impact assessment. Day 3 implements AI controls: transparency, fairness, data quality, human oversight, security. Day 4 covers monitoring, continual improvement and preparing for the certification audit. The four days follow PECB’s official course structure, with the exam at the end.
The exam covers 6 competency domains: fundamental principles of an AI management system; the AI management system; planning an AIMS implementation; implementing an AIMS; monitoring and measurement; continual improvement and preparing for the certification audit. Questions are weighted across the domains, and the course is organized so every domain is taught before you sit the exam.
The exam has 80 multiple-choice questions, a mix of standalone and scenario-based, and lasts 3 hours. It is open-book, and the passing score is 70%. Online exams are graded instantly.
Yes. Both the PECB certification exam and the certification fee are included in your course fee, and the exam is scheduled at the end of the course. There is nothing extra to buy to get certified.
Yes. We include one free exam retake within 12 months of your first attempt, and it is covered by your course fee.
It is the closest thing to a certifiable governance framework for it. An implemented AIMS produces the documented risk assessments, controls and human oversight that EU AI Act obligations expect, and the Act phases in through 2026 and 2027. ISO/IEC 42001 certification does not by itself make you compliant with the Act.
Lead Implementer builds and runs the AI management system. Lead Auditor assesses one against the standard. If AI governance is going to be your program, take Lead Implementer. Compare all of our PECB courses side by side on the PECB training courses page.
As of 2026 the only edition is ISO/IEC 42001:2023, and that is what this course teaches and the PECB exam tests. It is structured like ISO/IEC 27001, so the clauses will be familiar if you have worked with an ISMS.
Yes. PECB issues an attestation of course completion worth 31 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) credits to everyone who attends the course.
Yes. PECB is accredited to ISO/IEC 17024, the international standard for bodies certifying people, and its credentials are recognized internationally. Training Camp delivers the official PECB courseware as an authorized training partner.
