The Microsoft Certified: AI Agent Builder Associate is Microsoft's certification for building and integrating agents in Copilot Studio. This October 2026 guide covers exam AB-620, its three skill areas and their weights, the 120-minute format and passing score, the move out of beta, the free annual renewal, and the roles it fits.
The Microsoft Certified: AI Agent Builder Associate, earned by passing exam AB-620, is Microsoft's associate-level certification for professional developers and advanced builders who build, extend and integrate custom agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio.
The exam's full title is Designing and Building Integrated AI Agent Solutions in Copilot Studio, and the word that matters is integrated. Microsoft assumes you can already set up an agent with knowledge sources, instructions, tools and topics. The exam then asks you to connect that agent to Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, REST APIs, custom connectors, Azure AI Search, Microsoft Foundry and Microsoft Fabric, to build multi-agent solutions with the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol, and to test and ship agents through Power Platform pipelines.
AB-620 carries no formal prerequisites. Microsoft announced the beta on April 21, 2026, and the exam is now generally available. It is issued and maintained by Microsoft, and the current AB-620 study guide was last updated October 16, 2026.
Integration, identity, channel and responsible AI planning, then agent flows and topics. 30 to 35%.
Enterprise knowledge, MCP tools, REST APIs, computer use, multi-agent designs and Azure. The largest at 40 to 45%.
Test sets, evaluation methods, and lifecycle management with solutions, environment variables and pipelines. 20 to 25%.
Four things that set the AI Agent Builder apart from the other Copilot and agent certifications Microsoft launched in 2026.
Microsoft wrote AB-620 for IT application developers, consultants and independent software vendor (ISV) partners who build agents for organizations or customers. It sits at the associate tier. AB-900 covers the administration side at the fundamentals level, and the AB-100 architect credential sits above it at the expert tier.
The largest skill area, at 40 to 45 percent, is about connecting agents to other systems: Copilot connectors, Power Platform connectors, Azure AI Search, MCP tools, custom connectors, REST APIs, Foundry agents and Fabric data agents. Computer use, where an agent automates tasks in apps and websites, is in there too.
To earn the Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert, you pass AB-100 and hold one qualifying associate certification. AB-620 is on Microsoft's list. Our guide to Microsoft certifications maps where the rest of the AB series sits.
AB-620 is valid for one year and renews free through a short, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn. That's a lighter maintenance model than the multi-year paid cycles of most certifications. Microsoft doesn't claim a DoD 8140 mapping for it, so it won't satisfy a cyber-coded position requirement on its own.
Its weight comes from the Microsoft stack instead. Organizations that license Microsoft 365 Copilot and build in Copilot Studio need people who can take an agent from a demo to production, and that's the job Microsoft built this exam around.
The certification, the AB-620 exam and what it takes to keep it current, as of October 2026.
AB-620 is an associate credential, so the next move depends on whether you want to design whole agent solutions, write agents in code, or build the apps your agents live in. The three below are the common next steps.
The move from building agents to designing the solution around them. AB-100 covers planning, designing and deploying AI-powered business solutions. To earn the Expert credential you pass AB-100 and hold one qualifying associate certification, and AB-620 counts. Microsoft is updating the AB-100 exam on November 16, 2026.
The pro-code route. AI-103 is the associate exam for building generative AI apps and agents in Microsoft Foundry with Python. The Foundry items in AB-620, such as integrating a Foundry agent and using the Foundry model catalog, give you a head start on that platform.
The app side of Power Platform. AB-410 covers Dataverse data models, canvas and model-driven apps, cloud flows, and embedding agents and Copilot features into apps and Power Pages sites. It's another 120-minute associate exam, and it suits builders whose agents sit inside business apps.
AB-620 sits at the associate tier of Microsoft's Copilot and agent certifications. AB-900 and PL-900 are optional starting points, and from here the path leads up to the architect expert or out into pro-code and app building.

Two questions to answer before you commit: can you sit it, and should you pursue AB-620 specifically. Here's a straight answer to both.
No prerequisite credential required.
AB-620 has no formal prerequisites, and you don't need AB-900 or any other Microsoft certification first. You register through Pearson VUE and sit it at a test center or online with a proctor. Microsoft also offers a practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator and an exam sandbox, so you can see the question formats before test day.
This isn't a first look at agents.
Microsoft expects you to have configured agents with knowledge sources, instructions, tools and topics before you start, and to know Power Fx, Dataverse, REST APIs and prompt engineering. The exam builds on that with agent flows, MCP tools, multi-agent designs and pipelines. Build real agents in a Copilot Studio environment while you study, because the scenario questions assume you have.
AB-620 maps to the developer, consultant and partner roles that build agents in Copilot Studio for organizations already running Microsoft 365 Copilot and Power Platform.
Builds the agents an organization runs in Copilot Studio, from agent flows and topics to the tools and knowledge sources behind them. This is the job AB-620 was written around.
Connects agents to the systems they act on, through MCP servers, REST APIs and custom connectors, and designs multi-agent solutions that hand work between Copilot Studio, Foundry and Fabric agents.
Works across Power Fx, Dataverse, Power Automate and Copilot Studio. AB-620 adds the agent layer on top of the Power Platform skills this role already uses every day.
Plans and delivers agent projects for clients that already license Microsoft 365 Copilot, covering identity, channels, responsible AI and the governance questions that come up before go-live.
Builds agents into products and services for an independent software vendor (ISV) or Microsoft partner, packaging them as solutions that move between environments through pipelines.
The senior role a few steps on. Designs agent-first business solutions across the Microsoft stack, and it is the role behind the AB-100 expert credential, where AB-620 counts toward the prerequisite.
Three Microsoft certifications deal with agents from different sides. AB-900 covers administering Copilot and agents, AB-620 covers building them in Copilot Studio, and AI-103 covers coding them in Microsoft Foundry. Here's how they line up.

The AB-620 exam is organized into three skill areas, each carrying its own weight. Integrating and extending agents is the heaviest at 40 to 45 percent. Click any skill area for what it covers.
Planning integration with enterprise systems, the identity strategy, channels and deployment, responsible AI, security and governance, reusable agent components, and agents for internal or external audiences. Then building and monitoring agent flows in Copilot Studio, including human-in-the-loop flows, actions, connectors, input and output parameters and error handling, and configuring topics with tools, custom prompts, custom knowledge sources, Send HTTP requests, the generative answers node, adaptive cards and variables.
Connecting enterprise knowledge through Copilot connectors, Power Platform connectors and Azure AI Search. Adding tools to agents, from computer use and MCP tools to existing custom connectors and REST APIs. Designing multi-agent solutions that bring in a Foundry agent, an existing agent, a Fabric data agent or an agent reached over the A2A protocol. Integrating with Azure through Azure AI Search with Foundry, the Foundry model catalog and Application Insights monitoring.
Evaluating agent performance by creating a test set, choosing an evaluation method and reviewing the results. Then application lifecycle management for agents in Copilot Studio: creating a solution, adding existing agents to it, creating and using environment variables, and implementing and extending Power Platform Pipelines.
Skill areas and weights reflect the Microsoft AB-620 study guide, last updated October 16, 2026. Microsoft publishes no skills-measured date or change log for AB-620, and it notes that most questions cover generally available features, though commonly used preview features can appear. The questions candidates ask most often when researching the Microsoft AI Agent Builder certification.
The Microsoft Certified: AI Agent Builder Associate, earned by passing exam AB-620, is Microsoft's associate-level certification for professional developers and advanced builders who build, extend and integrate custom agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio. The exam, Designing and Building Integrated AI Agent Solutions in Copilot Studio, covers planning and configuring agents, integrating them with enterprise systems and Azure, and testing and managing them.
No. Microsoft announced the AB-620 beta on April 21, 2026 and planned general availability for June 2026. Its June 2026 credentials roundup lists AB-620 as generally available, and as of October 2026 the Microsoft Learn certification page carries no beta label. Microsoft holds beta scores until an exam goes live, so beta candidates got their final results after that point.
No. AB-620 has no formal prerequisites, and you don't need AB-900 or another certification first. Microsoft does expect real experience: configuring Copilot Studio agents with knowledge sources, instructions, tools and topics, familiarity with Power Fx, Dataverse, Power Platform environments, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Foundry and adaptive cards, intermediate knowledge of generative AI concepts such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), MCP and the A2A protocol, and experience with prompt engineering and REST APIs.
The three skill areas are Plan and configure agent solutions (30 to 35 percent), Integrate and extend agents in Copilot Studio (40 to 45 percent), and Test and manage agents (20 to 25 percent). Integration carries the most weight, covering knowledge sources, MCP tools, REST APIs, computer use, multi-agent solutions and Azure.
Microsoft doesn't publish a question count for AB-620. Its exam guidance says most Microsoft Certification exams have between 40 and 60 questions, and the number varies by exam. You get 120 minutes, and Microsoft suggests planning on 140 minutes of seat time for exams that may contain labs. The exam is proctored and may include interactive components. You can also open Microsoft Learn during the exam, though the clock keeps running.
You need 700 on a scale of 1 to 1,000 to pass. Microsoft uses scaled scoring, so 700 doesn't mean 70 percent correct. The number of points you need depends on how difficult your set of questions is, which is why Microsoft doesn't report a simple percentage.
AB-620 costs $165 USD in the United States as of October 2026. Microsoft prices exams by the country where you test, and taxes are extra. Training Camp's Microsoft Copilot and AI Agents Boot Camp includes vouchers for both AB-620 and AB-900 in the program fee, along with a free retake.
No. The AI Agent Builder Associate is a new certification, and Microsoft doesn't list it as the replacement for any retiring exam. Microsoft did retire the Applied Skills credential Create agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio on June 30, 2026, but it doesn't name AB-620 as that credential's successor. Applied Skills are shorter lab-based credentials, while AB-620 is a full role-based certification.
AB-620 is an associate certification and is valid for one year. You renew it free by passing a short, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn. You can take it any time in the six-month window before your expiration date, and passing extends the certification one year from that date. There's no limit on renewal attempts as long as you pass before it expires.
AB-620 maps to roles such as Copilot Studio Developer, AI Agent Developer, Power Platform Developer, Copilot Solutions Consultant, ISV Solution Engineer, and, further on, Agentic AI Solution Architect. Microsoft's own profile for the exam names IT application developers, consultants and independent software vendor (ISV) partners.
They answer different questions. AB-900 is a fundamentals exam (45 minutes, $99) for people who support and secure Microsoft 365 with Copilot and agents. AB-620, by contrast, is an associate exam (120 minutes, $165) for developers who build and integrate agents in Copilot Studio. You don't need AB-900 before AB-620, but it covers the tenant, identity and data protection basics that agent builders run into. Training Camp's Copilot and AI Agents Boot Camp covers both exams in one course.
AB-620 is an associate exam written for developers, and most of its difficulty comes from breadth. You need to know Copilot Studio well enough to build agent flows and topics, then connect agents to MCP servers, REST APIs, custom connectors, Azure AI Search, Foundry and Fabric, and finally test and deploy them with solutions and pipelines. The 120-minute exam may include interactive components, so time spent building agents in a real Copilot Studio environment matters more than reading.
For developers and consultants who already build in Copilot Studio, yes. It's the certification Microsoft wrote for that work, it renews free each year, and it counts as a qualifying associate certification for the Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert. It's less useful if you administer Copilot rather than build on it, where AB-900 fits better, or if you code agents in Python on Microsoft Foundry, where AI-103 is the closer match.
