AI+ Prompting Practitioner is AI CERTs' developer-level prompt engineering certification, tested by exam AC-1302. This guide, current as of October 2026, covers the exam, the seven blueprint domains and their weights, what it costs and how the one-year renewal works, the roles it fits, and how it compares with other AI certifications.
AI+ Prompting Practitioner is AI CERTs' advanced prompt engineering certification for developers, tested by exam AC-1302. AI CERTs notes that it was formerly called AI+ Prompt Engineer Level 2, which is the name Training Camp's course page still uses.
It checks that you can design, test and refine prompts inside working applications. In practice that means calling models through APIs, handling multi-turn and stateful conversations, measuring prompt variations with A/B tests, and fitting prompts into VSCode, Jupyter Notebooks and version control. The exam is AC-1302: 50 multiple-choice and multiple-response questions in 90 minutes, with a 70% passing score.
Unlike AI+ Prompting Fundamentals (AC-130), AI CERTs' entry-level prompting certification, this one expects you to code. AI CERTs lists familiarity with a programming language (Python recommended), basic knowledge of RESTful services and APIs, and a basic grasp of AI concepts and language models as prerequisites. It does not list Prompting Fundamentals as a requirement. The credential is issued and maintained by AI CERTs, which also publishes the exam blueprint and sets the renewal rules.
Structure prompts for code completion, debugging and other developer tasks sent through an API.
Design multi-turn, conditional and stateful prompts that keep a conversation on track.
Compare prompt variations with A/B tests, metrics and automated optimization tools.
Use prompts in VSCode and Jupyter Notebooks, with templates and version control.
Apply it to customer support, personalized content and data analysis projects.
Four design choices separate it from the prompting and AI credentials written for business users.
AI CERTs files Prompting Practitioner under its AI Development certifications and lists programming as a prerequisite, with Python recommended. Module 1 has you set up a development environment and make API calls, and later modules bring in LangChain, VSCode, Jupyter Notebooks and version control. Software developers, data scientists, AI researchers, AI trainers and machine learning engineers are all on AI CERTs' list of intended audiences.
Experimentation and Optimization carries 15% of the exam on its own. It covers automated prompt optimization tools, A/B testing, statistical evaluation and reinforcement learning techniques for refining prompts.
The final module is three projects: an AI customer support bot, a personalized content generation tool and an AI data analysis solution. Project-based learning carries 15% of the exam.
AI CERTs certifications are valid for one year. To keep yours current, you buy recertification in the AI CERTs store, work through the updated course content and pass a recertification assessment, as the AI CERTs recertification page sets out. There is a six-month grace period after the expiry date.
One year is short next to the three-year cycle CompTIA uses for its certifications, so plan for it. Miss the grace period and AI CERTs says you have to buy the full course again. On the other side, AI CERTs says earning a higher-level AI CERTs certification can count as recertification for the one you already hold.
The certification, the AC-1302 exam, and how renewal works as of October 2026, taken from AI CERTs' own certification page, store and candidate handbook.
AI CERTs splits prompt engineering into two certifications. AI+ Prompting Fundamentals asks for no technical skills, while AI+ Prompting Practitioner assumes you write code and call APIs. Here is how the two line up, and where AI CERTs points you next.
AI CERTs' entry-level prompting certification, listed under AI Essentials. No technical skills required. It runs one day instructor-led or about 8 hours self-paced, costs $195 in the AI CERTs store, and uses the same 50-question, 90-minute exam format with a 70% passing score.
The developer-level certification, listed under AI Development. It expects programming and API basics, runs five days instructor-led or about 40 hours self-paced, and costs $495 in the AI CERTs store. Its seven weighted domains are built around developer work.
On the Prompting Practitioner page, AI CERTs recommends AI+ Developer Practitioner, AI+ Engineer Practitioner, AI+ Vibe Coding Practitioner and AI+ Context Engineering Practitioner next. All four sit with it in AI CERTs' AI Development category.
Prompting Practitioner sits in the middle of an AI prompting path. Prompting Fundamentals or equivalent experience comes before it, and developer, agent and platform credentials come after. The next step depends on whether you stay with AI CERTs, build on one vendor's models, or move toward securing what you build.

Two questions to settle before you book: can you take the exam, and should Prompting Practitioner be the AI credential you go for. The first one has a short answer.
No training partner required.
AI CERTs' candidate handbook says neither its courseware nor partner-led training is mandatory to attempt one of its exams. The AI CERTs store sells the self-paced Prompting Practitioner course with the exam at $495 as of October 2026, with about 40 hours of video lessons, an e-book, labs, quizzes and one free retake. AI CERTs describes the package as a one-year subscription that includes updates.
Same exam, with a live instructor.
AI CERTs' instructor-led version runs five days, live virtual or in a classroom, through its authorized training partners, with live demos, time for questions and hands-on labs. Training Camp's five-day boot camp is one of those options, taught on AI CERTs' authorized courseware with the AC-1302 exam voucher included, so there is nothing extra to buy before you test.
Prompting Practitioner won't turn a beginner into a software engineer on its own. It adds prompt design, testing and integration skills to people who already write code or work with models. These roles come from the job roles and audiences AI CERTs lists for the certification:
Designs and tests prompts for a specific product or industry and keeps the output accurate and consistent. AI CERTs lists this role for the certification, and the Experimentation and Optimization domain is the part of the exam closest to the daily work.
Builds applications on top of language models through their APIs. The course starts with API calls and prompt structures for code completion and debugging, and the projects module has you build three working tools.
Connects models to existing systems and workflows through APIs. The Integration with Development Tools domain covers how prompts live in code repositories, templates and version control alongside the rest of the codebase.
Adds model features to products that already exist. AI CERTs names software developers skilled in Python as an audience, and the tools covered include LangChain and GitHub Copilot.
Works on NLP tasks and model behavior. The applications domain covers text generation, document summarization and sentiment analysis, and the optimization domain brings in reinforcement learning techniques for prompts.
Trains chatbots and AI systems to understand requests and respond well. AI CERTs lists AI trainers as an audience, and the multi-turn, role-based and persona material maps directly to chatbot work.
Prompting Practitioner is a developer prompting credential, so the useful comparisons are Prompting Fundamentals below it and two vendor credentials that test prompt and model work for developers.

How to read an official exam outline, use domain weights to plan study time, and turn the objectives into a study plan. The same method works on the AC-1302 blueprint.
The AC-1302 blueprint splits the exam into seven domains, one for each course module. Introduction to Prompt Engineering is the smallest at 10 percent, and the other six carry 15 percent each. With weights that even, no domain is safe to skip. Click any domain for what it covers.
The smallest domain. What prompt engineering means for developers, the basics of API interaction (including requests to OpenAI's API), and prompt structures for tasks like code completion and debugging. It also reviews case studies and common pitfalls, and the hands-on exercise has you set up a development environment and make basic API calls.
Advanced prompt techniques, multi-turn interactions, and contextual and conditional prompting. It then moves to domain-specific prompts, contextual and stateful prompt engineering, and meta-prompting with autonomous refinement, with LangChain used for optimization and a hands-on exercise to close the module.
Automated prompt optimization tools, including hyperparameter optimization and AI tools for prompt analysis. You set metrics for prompt effectiveness, design A/B tests for prompt variations, evaluate results with statistical methods, and apply reinforcement learning techniques, real-time feedback loops and the trade-off between exploration and exploitation.
Contextual and role-based prompting: keeping context across a conversation, using historical data for consistent answers, avoiding conversational drift, and designing personas to set tone. The second half covers adaptive and multimodal prompting, from real-time adaptation to prompts that combine text, images and audio.
How prompt engineering fits into VSCode and Jupyter Notebooks, with workflows and examples for each. It also covers code repositories and templates for prompt work, developer communities and forums, and version control for managing prompt engineering projects as a team.
Prompt engineering applied in three areas. NLP covers text generation, document summarization and sentiment analysis, with a news summarization case study. Business covers automated customer inquiries and AI in workflows, with a smart customer support case study. Creative covers storytelling, gameplay and multimedia content.
Three hands-on projects that pull the earlier domains together: an AI-driven customer support bot, a personalized content generation tool for marketing, and an AI solution for data analysis that turns prompts in your code into usable insights.
Domains and weights reflect the AC-1302 exam blueprint as published on AI CERTs' certification page and store, checked on October 21, 2026. The course also has an optional AI Agents module that does not appear in the exam blueprint.
The questions candidates ask most often when researching the AI+ Prompting Practitioner certification.
AI+ Prompting Practitioner is AI CERTs' advanced prompt engineering certification for developers, tested by exam AC-1302. It validates that you can design, test, optimize and integrate prompts for real AI applications. AI CERTs files it under AI Development, while the entry-level AI+ Prompting Fundamentals (AC-130) sits under AI Essentials.
No. AI CERTs doesn't list AI+ Prompting Fundamentals (AC-130) as a prerequisite. Its listed prerequisites are familiarity with a programming language (Python recommended), basic knowledge of RESTful services and API interactions, and a basic understanding of AI concepts and language models. AI CERTs does describe the audience as people who have finished basic prompt engineering courses, so Prompting Fundamentals or similar experience helps.
The AC-1302 exam has 50 multiple-choice and multiple-response questions and a 90-minute time limit. You need 70% to pass, which is 35 of 50. It is taken online through AI CERTs' proctored exam platform, and AI CERTs' candidate handbook says a human remote proctor checks a government-issued ID before you start.
The AC-1302 blueprint lists Introduction to Prompt Engineering (10%), Advanced Prompt Design and Engineering (15%), Experimentation and Optimization (15%), Designing Advanced Strategies for Prompt Engineering (15%), Integration with Development Tools (15%), Applications of Prompt Engineering in Various Domains (15%), and Project-Based Learning: Real-World AI Projects (15%). Six of the seven carry the same weight, so none is safe to skip.
As of October 2026, the AI CERTs store lists the self-paced AI+ Prompting Practitioner course at $495 USD. That includes video lessons, an e-book and audiobook, labs, quizzes, an AI mentor, and the online proctored exam with one free retake. Instructor-led training is sold through AI CERTs' authorized training partners, and Training Camp's boot camp includes the exam voucher.
Your purchase includes one free retake. AI CERTs' candidate handbook says the free retake has to be on the same exam version with the same voucher code, and before the voucher expires. After that, each further attempt needs a re-attempt fee, which AI CERTs says varies by certification level.
AI CERTs certifications are valid for one year. To renew, you buy recertification in the AI CERTs store, complete the updated course content and pass a recertification assessment. AI CERTs allows a six-month grace period. Miss it and you have to buy the full course again. The fee varies by certification and is shown at checkout.
AI+ Prompting Fundamentals (exam AC-130) needs no technical skills and runs one day instructor-led or about 8 hours self-paced. AI+ Prompting Practitioner (exam AC-1302) is built for developers, expects programming and API basics, and runs five days instructor-led or about 40 hours self-paced. Both exams have 50 questions, 90 minutes and a 70% passing score. In the AI CERTs store, Fundamentals is $195 and Practitioner is $495 as of October 2026.
AI CERTs doesn't claim either for this certification. Its July 2026 brochure says it strictly adheres to ISO 17024:2012 criteria, and its candidate handbook says it keeps agreements with vendors so that standard is followed in exam delivery. Neither is a claim of ANAB accreditation. The AI+ Prompting Practitioner pages make no DoD 8140 claim, so check the DoD Cyber Exchange if you need a credential for an 8140 work role.
Prompting Practitioner supports roles that build with language models, such as AI prompt engineer, AI application developer, AI integration specialist, software developer, data scientist or AI researcher, and AI trainer. AI CERTs lists AI developers, machine learning enthusiasts, tech professionals, students and new graduates, and AI researchers among its audiences. It adds prompt skills to a technical background rather than replacing one.
Yes, at a basic level. AI CERTs lists familiarity with at least one programming language as a prerequisite and recommends Python, and its executive summary for the certification says Python familiarity is required. Module 1 has you set up a development environment and make API calls, and Integration with Development Tools covers VSCode, Jupyter Notebooks and version control.
AI CERTs' instructor-led course runs five days, and the self-paced version has about 40 hours of content on a one-year subscription. Training Camp's boot camp also runs five days. AI CERTs does not publish a recommended study time beyond the course length.
It depends on what you need it for. Prompting Practitioner fits well if you write code, build on language model APIs, and want structured training in prompt design, testing and integration, with a credential that isn't issued by a model vendor. It fits less well if you need a credential that employers in your area already ask for by name, a DoD 8140 qualification, or one that lasts more than a year between renewals.
