Understanding Data Anonymization

Data anonymization is the process of irreversibly transforming personal data so that individuals can no longer be identified, directly or indirectly, even by the data controller. Techniques include generalization, suppression, perturbation, and aggregation, with models such as k-anonymity, l-diversity, and t-closeness used to measure re-identification risk. Truly anonymized data typically falls outside the scope of regulations like the GDPR, unlike pseudonymized data which remains personal data.
