Data Diode Definition: A data diode is a hardware unidirectional gateway that physically enforces one-way network traffic to protect OT, ICS, and classified systems.
A data diode is a hardware-enforced unidirectional gateway that physically permits network traffic to flow in only one direction, typically out of a high-security network, making it impossible for return traffic or remote commands to reach the protected side. It is widely used to safely export data from operational technology, industrial control, and classified environments without exposing them to inbound network threats. Because the one-way enforcement is implemented at the physical layer (for example, optical fiber with a transmitter on one side and a receiver on the other), it cannot be bypassed by software compromise.
