Safety Instrumented System (SIS) Definition: A safety instrumented system SIS independently brings industrial processes to a safe state via safety functions, governed by IEC 61511 SIL ratings.
A safety instrumented system SIS is an independent control system in industrial environments designed to bring a process to a safe state when predefined hazardous conditions occur. It executes safety instrumented functions SIFs using sensors, logic solvers, and final elements, and is engineered to standards such as IEC 61511 with defined Safety Integrity Levels. Because compromise can cause physical harm, SIS cybersecurity is a critical concern in OT environments, as shown by the Triton malware attack.
