What is Default Credentials?

Understanding Default Credentials

Default credentials are the factory-set usernames and passwords shipped with devices, software, and services that are intended to be changed before deployment. When left unchanged, they provide attackers trivial access and are routinely exploited against routers, IoT devices, industrial equipment, and databases. Hardcoded or default credentials remain a leading cause of breaches, which is why standards mandate changing or disabling them during provisioning.
