What is Exposure Factor (EF)?

The exposure factor EF is the percentage of an asset's value lost from a threat, used with asset value to compute Single Loss Expectancy.

Understanding Exposure Factor (EF)

The exposure factor EF is a quantitative risk metric representing the percentage of an asset's value that would be lost if a specific threat were realized. Expressed as a decimal between 0 and 1, it is multiplied by the asset value to calculate the Single Loss Expectancy SLE, which in turn feeds the Annualized Loss Expectancy used in risk analysis. For example, an EF of 0.5 means a threat event would destroy half the asset's value.
