Understanding Lawful Basis for Processing

Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation, a lawful basis for processing is one of the legal justifications an organization must establish before collecting or using personal data. Article 6 of the GDPR sets out six lawful bases: consent, contract, legal obligation, vital interests, public task, and legitimate interests. Selecting and documenting the appropriate basis is mandatory, must be determined before processing begins, and directly affects the data subject's rights and the controller's obligations.
