An N-day exploit targets a vulnerability that is already publicly known and usually has a vendor patch available, but which remains unpatched on a given system. The 'N' refers to the number of days since the flaw was disclosed, distinguishing it from a zero-day, which is exploited before any patch exists. Attackers favor N-day exploits because public disclosure and proof-of-concept code make them easy to weaponize against organizations that are slow to apply updates.
