Understanding NotPetya

NotPetya was a destructive malware outbreak in June 2017 that masqueraded as ransomware but was in fact a wiper designed to permanently destroy data with no viable recovery. It spread rapidly using the EternalBlue exploit and credential-harvesting tools after a compromised Ukrainian accounting software update, and is widely attributed to Russian military actors. NotPetya caused billions of dollars in global damage and is considered one of the costliest cyberattacks in history.
