Wiper Definition: A wiper is destructive malware that permanently erases data or disks for sabotage, unlike ransomware; examples include NotPetya and HermeticWiper.
A wiper is destructive malware designed to permanently erase or corrupt data, master boot records, or entire disks on infected systems, rendering them inoperable. Unlike ransomware, which encrypts data for extortion, a wiper offers no path to recovery and is aimed at sabotage and disruption. Wipers are frequently deployed in geopolitically motivated cyberattacks, with notable examples including Shamoon, NotPetya, and HermeticWiper.
