Understanding Wiper Malware

Wiper malware is destructive software whose primary purpose is to render data, systems, or boot infrastructure permanently unusable rather than to steal information or extort a ransom. It overwrites or corrupts files, master boot records, partition tables, or firmware, and is frequently deployed in sabotage and geopolitically motivated operations, sometimes disguised as ransomware to mislead defenders and complicate attribution. Notable examples include Shamoon, NotPetya, and several wipers used in attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure.
