Understanding One-Time Password (OTP)

A one-time password (OTP) is a single-use authentication code that is valid for only one login session or transaction, reducing the risk posed by stolen or replayed static passwords. OTPs can be generated based on a counter (HOTP, RFC 4226), based on time (TOTP, RFC 6238), or delivered out of band via SMS, email, or push notification. They are most commonly used as a second factor in multi-factor authentication.
