Passkey Definition: A passkey is a FIDO2 and WebAuthn passwordless credential using public-key cryptography to replace passwords with phishing-resistant authentication.
A passkey is a phishing-resistant, passwordless credential based on the FIDO2 and WebAuthn standards that replaces traditional passwords with public-key cryptography. The private key stays on the user's device and is unlocked with a biometric or PIN, while only the public key is registered with the service, so there is no shared secret to steal or reuse. Passkeys can be device-bound or synced across a user's devices through a platform provider, and they resist phishing, credential stuffing, and password reuse attacks.
