The right to be forgotten, formally the right to erasure under Article 17 of the EU GDPR, lets individuals request that a data controller delete their personal data when it is no longer necessary, consent is withdrawn, or processing is unlawful. The right is not absolute and may be overridden by obligations such as freedom of expression, legal compliance, or public-interest archiving.
