A Smurf Attack is a type of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack where an attacker sends a large volume of Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request packets with a spoofed source IP address to a network's broadcast address. This causes the targeted network to be flooded with ICMP echo replies, overwhelming its resources and disrupting its normal operation.
