A plain reference to the Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, current as of October 2026. It covers exam DP-300, the five domains and weights in the October 27, 2026 outline, the 100-minute format and 700 passing score, the $165 fee, the free annual renewal, DoD 8140 status, and the database roles it fits.
The Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, earned through exam DP-300 (Administering Microsoft Azure SQL Solutions), is Microsoft's role-based certification for the people who run SQL Server and Azure SQL databases in the cloud, on-premises and in hybrid setups.
Microsoft names four platforms you should know: Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines (Windows and Linux) and SQL Server on-premises. The job it describes is management, availability, security, and performance monitoring and optimization, plus evaluating and implementing migrations between Azure and on-premises. You're expected to use T-SQL and other tools to automate day-to-day operations, so the outline reads like a list of real administration tasks.
DP-300 carries no formal prerequisites, though Microsoft expects real experience on those platforms. It is issued and maintained by Microsoft, and the English exam moves to an updated skills outline on October 27, 2026.
Choosing, deploying and scaling Azure SQL offerings, and migrating databases. 15 to 20%.
Entra ID authentication, encryption, firewall rules and compliance controls. 20 to 25%.
Query Store, Extended Events, DMVs, indexes and automatic tuning. 20 to 25%.
SQL Server Agent jobs, elastic jobs, and ARM, Bicep, PowerShell and CLI deployments. 15 to 20%.
Backups, point-in-time restore, geo-replication, failover groups and availability groups. 20 to 25%.
Four things that set the Azure Database Administrator apart from other database credentials in 2026.
Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs and SQL Server on-premises each handle high availability, tuning and automation differently. DP-300 tests all four, which matches the mixed estates SQL Server teams actually run during and after a move to Azure.
The objectives read like a DBA's task list. Query Store and execution plans, session blocking, SQL Server Agent jobs, index and statistics maintenance, backups and point-in-time restores all appear by name, so a hiring manager can read the outline and see the job it covers.
Evaluating online and offline strategies, migrating to Azure and between Azure SQL services, and troubleshooting a migration all sit in domain 1. Our guide to MCSA alternatives shows DP-300 as the path for former MCSA: SQL Server holders.
DP-300 is valid for one year and renews free through an unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn. The renewal window opens six months before your expiration date, and there is no limit on attempts. Microsoft doesn't claim a DoD 8140 mapping for DP-300. The current matrix is published at the DoD Cyber Exchange.
Its weight comes from the job instead. Organizations moving SQL Server workloads to Azure need people who can secure, tune and recover every form of Azure SQL, and DP-300 is the Microsoft credential written for that role.
The certification, the DP-300 exam, and how to keep it current, as of October 2026.
DP-300 is the database administration credential in Microsoft's role-based path. The common next steps are AI development on the same SQL platforms, Fabric data engineering, or the wider Azure environment. Pick the one closest to where your job is going.
A newer Microsoft SQL credential, aimed at developers. DP-800 covers database design and advanced T-SQL, securing databases and deploying them through CI/CD with SQL Database Projects, and AI features such as embeddings, vector and hybrid search, and retrieval-augmented generation across SQL Server, Azure SQL and SQL databases in Microsoft Fabric. It's a sideways step for DBAs who also write the code.
For DBAs who end up owning the Azure environment around their databases, from identity and virtual networks to storage, compute and monitoring. AZ-104 is also the required prerequisite for the AZ-305 Solutions Architect Expert, so it's the route to Microsoft's expert tier. Our AZ-104 guide covers the exam.
For DBAs moving toward analytics. DP-300 already asks you to identify use cases for Azure SQL Database in Microsoft Fabric. DP-700 goes the rest of the way into Fabric data loading patterns, data architectures and orchestration, in a 100-minute exam at the same Intermediate level.
DP-300 sits at the associate tier of Microsoft's role-based path. Microsoft says DP-900 can help you prepare but isn't required, and from DP-300 the path branches into AI-enabled SQL development, Fabric data engineering or Azure infrastructure.

Two questions to answer before you commit: can you sit it, and should you pursue DP-300 specifically. Here's a straight answer to both.
No prerequisite credential required.
DP-300 has no formal prerequisites, and Microsoft says DP-900 Azure Data Fundamentals can help but isn't required. You register through Pearson VUE and sit it at a test center or online. That makes it a realistic first Microsoft certification for a working SQL Server DBA.
One side of the estate won't carry you.
Microsoft expects experience with Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs and SQL Server on-premises, and the objectives keep asking where they differ, from scaling each one to choosing hybrid or Azure-specific HA/DR. If you've only worked one side, build a small lab with an Azure SQL Database and a SQL Server VM while you study, and use Microsoft's free practice assessment to find the gaps.
DP-300 maps to the database administration, migration and data platform roles organizations need as SQL Server workloads move to Azure.
The role Microsoft writes DP-300 for. Keeps SQL Server and Azure SQL databases secure, backed up, tuned and available, and handles the day-to-day T-SQL work that comes with them.
Runs Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instance in production, from scaling and elastic jobs to failover groups and point-in-time restores. The DP-300 outline maps almost line for line to this job.
The on-premises DBA whose estate now spans a data center and Azure. DP-300 still tests SQL Server Agent, log shipping and Failover Cluster Instances, so existing skills count, and the Azure objectives fill in the rest.
Builds and automates the database layer with ARM, Bicep, PowerShell and the Azure CLI, and works with data engineers and solution architects on how the platform is deployed and secured.
Plans and runs moves from on-premises SQL Server to Azure SQL, choosing online or offline methods and troubleshooting when a cutover goes wrong. Migration has its own section in the DP-300 outline.
Diagnoses blocking, slow queries, failed jobs and access problems for internal teams or customers. The monitoring and troubleshooting objectives in DP-300 describe most of this work.
DP-800 is Microsoft's developer credential on the same SQL platforms, AZ-104 covers the Azure environment around them, and CompTIA DataSys+ is the vendor-neutral DBA option. Here's how the four line up.

Microsoft prices exams by the country where you test, so fees vary outside the United States. AZ-104 and DataSys+ figures come from the Training Camp AZ-104 guide and DataSys+ guide, and DP-800 figures from Microsoft Learn. Microsoft associate certifications renew free each year, while DataSys+ runs on a three-year CompTIA continuing education cycle.

Recommending an HA/DR strategy from RPO and RTO requirements, planning how to test it, and running backup and restore with native tools and T-SQL, including point-in-time restore, long-term retention and backup to cloud storage. Configuration covers active geo-replication, failover groups, Always On availability groups on Managed Instance and Azure VMs, Failover Cluster Instances on Azure VMs and log shipping.
Domains and weights reflect the Microsoft DP-300 skills-measured outline as of October 27, 2026 (English), from the study guide updated September 25, 2026. Microsoft's change log lists minor changes in one skill group, Implement security for data at rest and data in transit. Localized versions update about eight weeks after English, so confirm the current outline in the DP-300 study guide before scheduling.
The questions candidates ask most often when researching the Microsoft Azure Database Administrator certification.
The Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, earned by passing exam DP-300 (Administering Microsoft Azure SQL Solutions), is Microsoft's role-based certification for database administrators who run SQL Server and Azure SQL. It covers Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines and SQL Server on-premises, across deployment, migration, security, performance tuning, automation, and high availability and disaster recovery.
The current exam is DP-300: Administering Microsoft Azure SQL Solutions. Microsoft's study guide lists the skills measured as of October 27, 2026, the date the English exam updates. The change log lists one change, minor updates inside the Implement security for data at rest and data in transit skill group. Localized versions follow about eight weeks after English.
No retirement has been announced. As of October 2026, DP-300 isn't on Microsoft's list of exams scheduled to retire, and the certification page points to the October 27, 2026 update instead. The newer DP-800 exam, which earns the Microsoft Certified: SQL AI Developer Associate, is a separate developer credential. Microsoft's August 2026 partner announcements list it as a new addition with no retiring certification behind it.
No. DP-300 has no formal prerequisites, so anyone can register and sit the exam. Microsoft expects knowledge of and experience with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines (Windows and Linux) and SQL Server on-premises. DP-900 Azure Data Fundamentals can help you prepare, but Microsoft says it isn't a prerequisite.
The five domains are Plan and implement data platform resources (15 to 20 percent), Implement a secure environment (20 to 25 percent), Monitor, configure, and optimize database resources (20 to 25 percent), Configure and manage automation of tasks (15 to 20 percent), and Plan and configure a high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) environment (20 to 25 percent). Security, performance and HA/DR carry the most weight.
Microsoft doesn't publish a question count for DP-300. Its general guidance is that most Microsoft Certification exams have 40 to 60 questions, and the number can vary. You get 100 minutes, and Microsoft suggests planning about 120 minutes of seat time for the instructions and candidate agreement. Microsoft doesn't list question types ahead of time, but its exam sandbox shows formats such as case studies, build list and active screen.
You need 700 on a scale of 1 to 1,000. Microsoft reports a scaled score, so 700 doesn't mean 70 percent of the points. The passing line reflects the knowledge needed to show competence and the difficulty of the questions you get. If you fail, you can retake the exam after 24 hours, then wait 14 days between later attempts, up to five tries in 12 months.
As of October 2026, the DP-300 exam costs $165 USD in the United States. Microsoft sets the price by the country where you test, and local taxes can apply. You schedule through Pearson VUE, at a test center or online with a remote proctor. Training Camp's Azure Database Administrator boot camp includes the $165 exam voucher and an exam retake.
Microsoft doesn't claim a DoD 8140 mapping for DP-300, so don't count on it to meet a cyber-coded position requirement on its own. The DoD qualification matrix decides that, and it's published through the DoD Cyber Exchange. DP-300's value comes from the database work itself in organizations that run SQL Server and Azure SQL. See the full DoD 8140 work role paths.
The Azure Database Administrator Associate is valid for one year. You renew it free by passing an unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn. The window opens six months before your expiration date, there's no limit on attempts, and passing extends the certification one year from the expiration date. If it lapses, you have to pass DP-300 again.
DP-300 fits roles such as Database Administrator, Azure SQL Database Administrator, SQL Server DBA, Data Platform Engineer, Cloud Migration Engineer and Database Support Engineer. It suits DBAs whose SQL Server estate is moving to Azure, and cloud teams that run Azure SQL Database or Managed Instance in production.
Take the one that matches your job. DP-300 is for the person who keeps databases secure, fast, backed up and available. DP-800, the SQL AI Developer Associate exam, targets developers who build them using T-SQL, CI/CD through SQL Database Projects, embeddings, vector search and retrieval-augmented generation. DP-800 runs 120 minutes against 100 for DP-300, and both cost $165 in the US. If you do both jobs, start with the one that fills more of your week.
The hard part is breadth. Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance and SQL Server on a VM each handle high availability, tuning and automation differently, and all of them are fair game. A DBA who has only run on-premises SQL Server can get caught out by elastic jobs and failover groups, while a cloud-only admin can stumble on SQL Server Agent, log shipping and Failover Cluster Instances. Hands-on time on each platform, plus Microsoft's free practice assessment, does more than reading.
For DBAs who work with SQL Server and Azure SQL, yes. It's Microsoft's certification for the database administrator role, the exam costs $165, and renewal is free each year. It also covers migration, which is the work many SQL Server teams face as they move to Azure. It's less useful if your databases run on Oracle, PostgreSQL or a mix of platforms, where vendor-neutral CompTIA DataSys+ travels further.
Tell us where you are, whether that's weighing the certification, planning a move off on-premises SQL Server, or arranging Azure SQL training for a team, and we'll help you map out the next step.
