Understanding Human Machine Interface (HMI)

A Human Machine Interface HMI is the operator-facing console or graphical interface used to monitor and control industrial processes within ICS and SCADA environments. HMIs display sensor readings, alarms, and equipment status while allowing operators to issue commands to PLCs and other controllers. Because they bridge IT and operational technology and often run on outdated Windows systems, HMIs are high-value targets whose compromise can give attackers direct influence over physical processes.
