Privacy Shield Framework Definition: The Privacy Shield Framework was an EU-US data protection agreement for transatlantic personal data transfers, invalidated in 2020 ("Schrems II") and later replaced by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
The Privacy Shield Framework was a set of principles agreed upon by the European Union and the United States to allow transfers of personal data between the two regions in compliance with EU data protection standards. It offered a mechanism for U.S. companies to self-certify their adherence to specific privacy principles to safeguard the rights of individuals. The EU-US Privacy Shield was invalidated by the Court of Justice of the European Union in the July 2020 "Schrems II" decision; it was succeeded by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, adopted in 2023.
