Use Your GI Bill® for IT Certification Training

Which courses, formats and payment arrangements are open to you depends on your education benefit and the program you choose. We’ll help you sort out what applies before you enroll.

For Veterans, active-duty service members, and spouses and dependents with eligible VA education benefits.

Payment depends on your route. Chapter 33 certification prep is paid upfront by you and reimbursed by VA later; approved in-person training is paid by VA to the school. Not every course or format is covered. Compare routes

Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)

Two Ways to Train, Paid Differently

With Chapter 33 there are two routes at Training Camp. The difference is how payment works, not just where you sit.

Route 1

Approved in-person training (NCD)

Chapter 33. Other benefits: see below.

Format
In person, for approved courses, locations and schedules. NCD (non-college degree) is VA’s term for approved training that doesn’t lead to a degree.
Pay before class?
VA pays eligible tuition to the school. An advisor explains any costs for your situation before you enroll.
Who pays whom
You enroll through our school enrollment and certification process; VA pays Training Camp.
Housing
May be available, depending on your eligibility and enrollment.
Entitlement
Charged under VA’s rules for your benefit and program.
See approved in-person courses →
Route 2

Approved certification prep (reimbursement)

Chapter 33 only. Nine approved courses.

Format
Live online for all nine. CISA and CRISC are also approved in person.
Pay before class?
Yes. You pay Training Camp in full before you attend.
Who pays whom
You pay Training Camp. Afterward, you request reimbursement from VA.
Course and exam
Separate charges on your invoice, claimed separately: the course with VA Form 22-10272, the exam with VA Form 22-0803.
Reimbursement
Subject to VA eligibility, approved expenses and remaining entitlement. VA processing times vary.
Housing
No housing allowance, including in-person CISA and CRISC.
Entitlement
Uses your remaining entitlement, based on what VA reimburses.
See the nine approved prep courses →

Class length isn’t the same as entitlement charged. How much entitlement a course uses depends on your benefit and route, not only the days you spend in class. How VA charges entitlement

Using Chapter 30, 1606, 35 or 31?

Chapters 30, 1606 and 35 can be used for approved in-person training and test-fee reimbursement, but the Chapter 33 prep approval doesn’t apply and payment works differently. VR&E covers training only as part of a plan your counselor authorizes. Compare benefits

On active duty?

Post-9/11 and Montgomery GI Bill® benefits can be used on active duty, but the payment rules are different. Check with your base education office or VA about payment and entitlement before you enroll.

Used your benefit before?

Having used a benefit before doesn’t mean it’s still available. Check your remaining benefits on VA.gov or download your education letter.

How Certification Prep Reimbursement Works

Chapter 33 prep route. Training Camp gives you the invoice and documents and walks you through each form. You submit the reimbursement requests to VA.

  1. Choose your course and review your benefits

Confirm the approved delivery format for your course. Provide your Chapter 33 Certificate of Eligibility through our enrollment process.

  2. Pay for your training

You pay in full before attending. You get an itemized invoice that shows the prep course and the exam as separate charges.

  3. Complete your course

Keep your payment receipt and the enrollment or completion documents Training Camp gives you.

  4. Request prep-course reimbursement

After the course, submit VA Form 22-10272 with the required documents.

  5. Take your exam and request exam reimbursement

Submit VA Form 22-0803 with your exam payment receipt and your test results or other evidence VA accepts. Approved exams can qualify even if you don’t pass.

Submitting your requests

Follow VA’s Current Instructions

Filling out a form online and submitting your claim can be separate steps. For the exam form, VA asks you to download the completed form and then upload it through QuickSubmit or mail it. Check VA’s licensing and certification page for the current steps before you submit.

VA processing times vary. Send complete documents with each request to avoid delays.

Before you enroll

How VA Charges Your Entitlement

Entitlement is the amount of benefit you have left. Your Certificate of Eligibility shows it.

How much a course uses depends on your benefit and your training route. For approved in-person training, VA applies its rules for that program and benefit. That isn’t always the same as the time you spend in class.

For Chapter 33 prep courses and certification tests, VA charges entitlement based on the amount it pays you back, under its current rules.

An advisor can review your situation and give you an individual estimate. See VA’s current rates.

Benefits for Spouses and Children

Spouses and children may be able to train with Training Camp using Chapter 35 (DEA) benefits or Post-9/11 benefits a service member transferred to them.

Eligibility and payment rules depend on the benefit. Send us the benefit you have and the certification you want, and an advisor will confirm what applies.

Using VR&E (Chapter 31)?

Training is covered only when it’s part of a plan your VR&E counselor approves and authorizes. Start with your counselor, and ask what they need about the course you’re considering.

GI Bill® Questions

Can I use my Post-9/11 GI Bill® for online certification training?

Yes, for nine approved certification prep courses. You pay Training Camp upfront, then request reimbursement from VA after the course. Reimbursement is subject to VA eligibility, approved expenses, and remaining entitlement.

Which online prep courses are approved?

CCNA, CCNP Security, CCSP, CEH, CISA, CISM, CISSP, CRISC and CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701). All nine are approved online, and CISA and CRISC are also approved in person. The CCNP Security exam (300-745) is not approved for VA reimbursement. See the courses.

Do I have to pay upfront?

For the Chapter 33 certification prep option, yes. You pay in full before attending and get an itemized invoice. For approved in-person (NCD) training under Chapter 33, VA pays eligible tuition to the school; an advisor explains any costs for your situation. Other benefits pay differently.

Does this prep option include a housing allowance?

No. The certification prep route doesn’t include a housing allowance, and that includes the in-person CISA and CRISC prep courses. Housing may be available for approved in-person (NCD) training, depending on your eligibility and enrollment.

Are course and exam reimbursement separate?

Yes. After the course, you request prep-course reimbursement with VA Form 22-10272. After the exam, you request exam reimbursement separately with VA Form 22-0803. Your itemized invoice shows the two charges separately.

Can an approved exam be reimbursed if I do not pass?

Yes. VA says it can pay back an approved test fee even if you don’t score high enough to pass, up to $2,000 per test and as long as you have entitlement left. The exam must be approved: the CCNP Security exam (300-745) is not.

How much of my remaining GI Bill® entitlement will this use?

It depends on your benefit and the amounts VA pays back. For prep courses and tests, VA charges entitlement based on the amount it reimburses. An advisor can give you an individual estimate, and VA lists its current rates.

How long does VA reimbursement take?

VA processing times vary. Sending complete documents with each request helps avoid delays.

How can I confirm the course and delivery format before enrolling?

Talk to a Training Camp veteran advisor before you pay. We’ll confirm that the course and format you want are approved for your benefit and send you the details in writing.

Is Training Camp approved for the GI Bill®?

Yes. Training Camp is approved by VA under facility code 25835438. Approval applies to specific courses and formats, so an advisor confirms the one you want before you enroll.

Can I use my GI Bill® while I’m still on active duty?

Post-9/11 and Montgomery GI Bill® benefits can be used on active duty, but the payment rules are different. Your base education office or VA can tell you what applies to you.

Can my spouse or child use benefits for training?

Family members with Chapter 35 benefits, or with Post-9/11 benefits transferred to them, may be able to use them for approved training. Their Certificate of Eligibility shows what they have, and an advisor can tell you which of our options apply.

What if I don’t pass the exam?

Our free retake guarantee lets you sit the class again at no cost. Ask your advisor how a second exam attempt works with your benefit.
