There are two sets of prerequisites:

Option 1: A four-year degree, 36 months leading projects, and 35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® Certification.

Apply online at PMI’s website. You’ll need to document your education, project management experience, and training. PMI may audit your application, so be prepared to provide supporting documentation.

The exam covers three domains:

People: emphasizing the skills and activities associated with effectively leading a project team.
Process: reinforcing the technical aspects of managing a project.
Business Environment: highlighting the connection between projects and organization strategy.

The exam consists of 180 questions, including multiple-choice, multiple responses, matching, hotspot, and limited fill-in-the-blank. It needs to be completed in 230 minutes.

For PMI members, the exam fee is $405, and for non-members, it’s $555. Membership costs $139 with an annual renewal fee.

Preparation strategies include self-study, attending PMP boot camps or training sessions, and studying the PMBOK® Guide and other PMI publications. Practice exams and study groups can also be beneficial.

Training Camp offers official PMP training courses, and there are many PMI-authorized training partners (ATPs) providing courses worldwide. These courses satisfy the 35-hour project management education requirement.

PMP certification is valid for three years. To renew it, you must earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) in three years and apply for renewal with PMI. PDUs can be earned through various professional development activities.
