Overview

What Is the VCP-VVF Administrator (2V0-16.25)?

VMware Certified Professional - VMware vSphere Foundation Administrator, VCP-VVF Admin for short, is the VCP Broadcom now offers for the people who run vSphere. You earn it by passing exam 2V0-16.25, which is written against VMware vSphere Foundation 9.0.

Broadcom says the credential validates the skills to deploy, manage and support private cloud environments built on vSphere Foundation, and it aims the exam at IT professionals moving from traditional infrastructure roles into cloud administration. In practice that means vCenter and ESX, vSAN, vSphere Supervisor for Kubernetes and VM workloads, and the VCF Operations and VCF Operations for Logs tools that come with VVF.

If you studied for the old VCP-DCV, expect a wider exam. Monitoring, dashboards, cost reporting and Supervisor services now sit next to clusters and datastores. Broadcom still lists the vSphere 8 VCP-DCV (2V0-21.23), but under its legacy certifications, which makes it the second choice for most people starting in 2026.

VCP-VVF Admin has no prerequisites, and the official course is recommended rather than required. It is issued and maintained by Broadcom, and the 2V0-16.25 exam guide was last updated on August 15, 2025.

Why VCP-VVF Matters

Why Is VCP-VVF the vSphere Credential to Earn Now?

Four things that separate the vSphere Foundation Administrator from the VCP most admins remember.

The VCP Written for vSphere 9

Broadcom rebuilt the VMware program around two product lines, vSphere Foundation and Cloud Foundation, and split each by job role. VCP-VVF Admin is the administrator credential on the vSphere Foundation side of the 2026 certification path document, and 2V0-16.25 tests version 9.0 rather than the vSphere 8 release the old VCP-DCV covered.

More Than Clusters and Datastores

The blueprint goes well past ESX and vCenter. Objective 4.3 covers VCF Operations dashboards, alerts, costing and compliance monitoring, and 4.4 covers the VM Service, Kubernetes workloads and vSphere Pods on Supervisor. Admins who know only vSphere 8 tend to underestimate that half of the exam.

Exam Only, No Course Gate

Since May 6, 2024, Broadcom hasn’t required a course or a lower certification before a VCP. The course still earns its place if you have no vSphere Foundation 9 lab to practice on. Our guide to VMware certification after Broadcom walks through that choice.

The Renewal Model, and Where Recognition Comes From

VCF certifications, VCP-VVF Admin included, are valid for three years from the issue date, and Broadcom says you renew by passing the relevant exam. There are no continuing education credits to log. Broadcom publishes no DoD 8140 mapping for this credential, and the current qualification matrices are published at the DoD Cyber Exchange.

Its value comes from the platform instead. If your employer runs vSphere Foundation, this is the credential that names the exact product version on your hosts, and the three-year clock keeps it tied to a current release.

What Comes After VCP-VVF Admin?

Broadcom’s certifications are role-based rather than a strict ladder, so none of these requires VCP-VVF Admin first. These are the three moves that build most directly on it.

VCP-VCF Administrator (2V0-17.25)

The move up the stack. This exam tests the full Cloud Foundation build, adding NSX, VCF Automation, VCF Identity Broker, fleet management and HCX to the vSphere Foundation components. Take it when your organization actually runs Cloud Foundation, because those questions assume you have used them.

VCP-VVF Support (2V0-18.25)

The troubleshooting move on the same platform. Broadcom built it around standard troubleshooting methods for problems that come up while deploying and operating VVF, across vCenter, ESX, vSAN, VCF Operations and VCF Operations for Logs. It suits admins whose week is mostly tickets and root cause work.

VCAP-VCF VKS (3V0-24.25)

The specialist move for Supervisor work. This advanced professional exam covers deploying, operating and securing vSphere Kubernetes Service inside Cloud Foundation. If you also want a vendor-neutral Kubernetes credential, our CKA guide covers the hands-on Linux Foundation exam.

Decision Point

Is VCP-VVF Admin Right For You?

Two questions to answer before you commit: can you sit it, and should you pursue VCP-VVF Admin specifically. Here’s a straight answer to both.

Q1

Do You Qualify for 2V0-16.25?

Short Answer

Anyone Can Sit 2V0-16.25

No course and no prior certification required.

Broadcom’s current certification FAQ says no prerequisites are required for VCP or VCAP exams, which has been the rule since May 6, 2024. You register through Broadcom’s certification portal, buy a $250 voucher and book the exam with Pearson VUE, either at a test center or online.

Honest Caveat

Lab Time Is the Real Gate

VCF Operations is hard to fake.

Broadcom’s target candidate has at least six months on vSphere Foundation or its components, a year in IT, and foundational Kubernetes knowledge. ESX and vCenter are easy enough to practice in a home lab. Supervisor, vSAN ESA and VCF Operations dashboards are harder to stand up, and they account for a large share of the objectives. That gap is the best reason to take the course.

Q2

Is VCP-VVF Admin the Right Certification for Your Goals?

VCP-VVF Admin Is a Strong Fit If...

  • You run vSphere today and your organization has moved, or plans to move, to vSphere Foundation 9
  • You want the VCP Broadcom currently lists for vSphere administrators, not a legacy one
  • You want to add VCF Operations monitoring and Supervisor workloads to the vCenter skills you already have
  • You plan to take VCP-VCF Administrator or a VCAP later and want the core platform solid first
  • You want a credential with no mandatory course and a flat $250 exam fee
  • You’re coming from server or storage administration and moving into private cloud work

Consider Alternatives If...

  • Your hosts will stay on vSphere 8 for the foreseeable future, where VCP-DCV (2V0-21.23) matches the product you run
  • Your organization runs full Cloud Foundation with NSX and VCF Automation, where VCP-VCF Administrator fits better
  • Your job is mostly troubleshooting, where VCP-VVF Support (2V0-18.25) maps closer to the work
  • Your workloads are moving to public cloud, where a credential like the AWS Solutions Architect Associate may be the better use of study time
  • You are new to IT, since Broadcom’s target candidate has at least a year of IT experience
  • You need a DoD 8140 qualification specifically, since Broadcom publishes no 8140 mapping for VCP-VVF Admin
Career Paths

What Jobs Can You Get With VCP-VVF Admin?

Broadcom aims the credential at the people who implement and maintain vSphere Foundation infrastructure. In job listings that work shows up under several titles.

Administration

VMware Administrator

Runs the vCenter, ESX and vSAN estate day to day: lifecycle updates on hosts, cluster settings, permissions and keeping virtual machines placed and protected. This is the job 2V0-16.25 is written around.

Engineering

Virtualization Engineer

Builds and changes the virtual infrastructure itself, from new clusters and vSAN storage policies to distributed switching and the Supervisor setup that hosts Kubernetes and VM Service workloads.

Cloud Operations

Private Cloud Administrator

Operates an on-premises cloud for internal teams. In vSphere Foundation 9 that means VCF Operations dashboards, alerts, and cost and pricing reports as much as host configuration.

Systems

Systems Engineer

Broadcom lists system engineers among the job roles for the vSphere 8 VCP-DCV, and the same work carries over to vSphere Foundation 9. Most server work now runs on the hypervisor and management layer this exam covers.

Advisory

Infrastructure Consultant

Plans and delivers vSphere Foundation deployments and upgrades for clients. A VCP tied to version 9.0 shows a client you were tested on the release you are about to install for them.

Support

Infrastructure Support Engineer

Works escalations on ESX hosts, vCenter and vSAN. VCP-VVF Admin covers how the platform should run, and VCP-VVF Support (2V0-18.25) adds the troubleshooting side when the job is mostly tickets.

Comparison

How Does VCP-VVF Compare to VCP-DCV and VCP-VCF?

These are the three VCP exams a vSphere administrator is most likely to weigh in 2026: the current vSphere Foundation exam, the legacy vSphere 8 exam, and the full Cloud Foundation administrator exam.

Curriculum

Inside the 2V0-16.25 Objectives.

Broadcom’s exam guide uses a standard five-section blueprint, but only Section 2 and Section 4 carry testable objectives on 2V0-16.25. Broadcom publishes no weights. VVF: Operate alone holds 19 of the 48 objective statements, so give VCF Operations real study time. Click any objective for what it covers.

Section 2

vSphere Foundation Fundamentals
2.1 Virtualization Fundamentals

The principles of virtualization, the use cases it serves and the value it brings to an organization. It is the conceptual base the rest of the exam assumes you already have, and it is short: three objective statements.

2.2 VMware Compute Fundamentals

Deploying and configuring vCenter and ESX, building a vSphere cluster, deploying virtual machines and managing them through vCenter, day 2 operations, Content Libraries, and encryption to secure workloads and infrastructure.

2.3 VMware Storage Fundamentals

Configuring vSphere storage, choosing between vSAN ESA and vSAN OSA, deploying a vSAN cluster, building vSAN storage policies, and the resilience, data availability and space efficiency options vSAN offers.

2.4 VMware Network Fundamentals

Telling the networking components of a vSphere Foundation environment apart in a given scenario. It is a single objective statement, the smallest of the eight. NSX belongs to the Cloud Foundation exam, not this one.

Section 4

Deploy, Configure, and Operate VVF
4.1 VVF: Deploy and Configure

The components of a VVF deployment, how a vSphere Foundation environment is deployed, and configuring vSphere Supervisor within a cluster so it can run Kubernetes and VM Service workloads.

4.2 VVF: Manage

Identity management and role-based access control, license management, certificate management, and managing the lifecycle of a vSphere Foundation environment.

4.3 VVF: Operate

VCF Operations and VCF Operations for Logs: deployment options, metrics versus properties versus logs, views, reports, dashboards, alerts, costing and pricing, policies, vSAN monitoring, service discovery, and security hardening and compliance. With 19 of the 48 objective statements, it is the biggest objective in the guide.

4.4 VVF: Consume and Automate

Supervisor-based services: deploying virtual machines with the VM Service, Kubernetes workloads, and vSphere Pods and other services, plus the use case for VCF Operations Orchestrator.

Objectives reflect Broadcom’s VMware vSphere Foundation 9.0 Administrator (2V0-16.25) exam guide, last updated August 15, 2025. Sections 1, 3 and 5 have no testable objectives in this version. Broadcom refreshes its exam guides, so check the current one on the VCP-VVF Administrator page before you schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About VCP-VVF Admin.

The questions candidates ask most often when they research the VMware vSphere Foundation Administrator certification and the vSphere 8 alternative.

What is the VMware VCP-VVF Administrator certification?

VMware Certified Professional - VMware vSphere Foundation Administrator (VCP-VVF Admin) is Broadcom’s professional-level credential for people who deploy, manage and support private cloud environments built on VMware vSphere Foundation. You earn it by passing exam 2V0-16.25, which covers vCenter, ESX, vSAN, vSphere Supervisor, VCF Operations and VCF Operations for Logs on version 9.0.

Which VCP is current for vSphere 9?

For vSphere Foundation 9.0 it’s VCP-VVF Administrator, earned through exam 2V0-16.25. If your organization runs the full VMware Cloud Foundation 9 stack, the matching administrator credential is VCP-VCF Administrator, earned through 2V0-17.25. Both appear on Broadcom’s 2026 VMware Cloud Foundation certification path document.

Is the vSphere 8 VCP-DCV exam still offered?

Yes, as of October 21, 2026. Broadcom lists VMware Certified Professional - Data Center Virtualization (2V0-21.23) under its legacy certifications, and the page still links to exam registration. The exam is VMware vSphere 8.x Professional, with 70 items, 135 minutes, a scaled passing score of 300 and a $250 fee. It isn’t on Broadcom’s 2026 certification path document, so check the exam page before you buy a voucher.

Do you need to take a VMware course to get the VCP?

No. Broadcom dropped the training requirement on May 6, 2024, and its current certification FAQ says no prerequisites are required for VCP or VCAP exams. Broadcom recommends the vSphere Foundation: Build, Manage and Operate course for 2V0-16.25, but passing the exam is the only requirement for the credential.

What does the 2V0-16.25 exam cover?

Two sections carry testable objectives. Section 2, VMware vSphere Foundation Fundamentals, covers virtualization, compute, storage and network fundamentals. Section 4 covers deploying and configuring VVF, managing it, operating it with VCF Operations and VCF Operations for Logs, and consuming and automating it through Supervisor services. Broadcom doesn’t publish weights for these sections.

How many questions are on the 2V0-16.25 exam and what score do you need?

The exam has 60 items and a 135-minute appointment, which Broadcom says includes enough time for non-native English speakers. You need a scaled score of 300 to pass. Broadcom offers it in English and Japanese.

How much does the VCP-VVF exam cost?

The exam costs $250 USD as of October 2026, which is Broadcom’s standard price for each exam in the program. You buy a voucher and book the exam with Pearson VUE. Training Camp’s vSphere Foundation V9.0 boot camp includes the $250 exam voucher for 2V0-16.25.

Can you take the VCP-VVF exam online?

Usually, yes. Broadcom delivers its VMware exams through Pearson VUE, which runs both test center appointments and OnVUE online testing for Broadcom exams, though OnVUE is restricted for IDs from some countries. If you don’t pass, Broadcom’s retake policy requires a seven-day wait before your next attempt.

How long is VCP-VVF valid and how do you renew it?

Broadcom says all VCF certifications, VCP-VVF Administrator included, are valid for three years from the issue date. Renewal works by exam rather than continuing education credits, since Broadcom says you only need to pass the relevant exam to earn or renew a certification. Broadcom also says it will send renewal information before your credential expires.

Does an old VCP-DCV count toward VCP-VVF?

No. Broadcom’s certification FAQ says an existing VCP does not carry over to the new certifications, and VMware’s July 2025 announcement says exams passed under the previous structure cannot be applied to them. To hold VCP-VVF Admin, you pass 2V0-16.25 like any new candidate.

Is VCP-VVF Administrator on DoD 8140?

Broadcom doesn’t publish a DoD 8140 work role mapping for VCP-VVF Administrator on its certification pages. If your position needs an 8140 qualification, check the current qualification matrix for your work role before you pick a certification. See the full DoD 8140 work role paths.

What jobs can you get with VCP-VVF Admin?

It fits VMware Administrator, Virtualization Engineer, Private Cloud Administrator, Systems Engineer, Infrastructure Consultant and Infrastructure Support Engineer roles. Broadcom aims it at the people who implement and maintain vSphere Foundation infrastructure and keep it meeting availability, performance and security targets.

VCP-VVF vs VCP-VCF, which should you take?

Match the exam to the platform you run. VCP-VVF covers vSphere Foundation, meaning vCenter, ESX, vSAN, Supervisor and VCF Operations. VCP-VCF covers the full Cloud Foundation stack and adds components such as NSX, VCF Automation and HCX. If your organization hasn’t licensed Cloud Foundation, the VVF exam is the one you can actually practice for.

Is VCP-VVF Administrator worth it in 2026?

For anyone running vSphere Foundation 9 or planning the move, yes. It’s the administrator VCP Broadcom currently lists for vSphere Foundation, it costs $250 with no course requirement, and the VCP-VCF and VCAP exams cover the same platform in more depth if you want to go further. It’s a weaker choice if your environment will stay on vSphere 8 or is moving off VMware.
